Quail Studio Breeze: A Cabled Worsted-Weight Pullover Sweater Knitting Pattern

The Quail Studio Breeze is a beautifully structured pullover sweater knitting pattern from Quail Studio, designed for knitters who enjoy combining classic cable textures with a relaxed, wearable silhouette. Worked in a worsted-weight yarn with a generous range of sizes, Breeze is an ideal project for intermediate knitters looking to build confidence with cables while producing a polished, seamed garment.

What Is Being Made

Breeze is a seamed pullover sweater featuring an allover cable and knit stitch pattern across the body. The design is available in six sizes to fit bust measurements ranging from 71–76 cm (28–30 in) up to 122–127 cm (48–50 in), with actual finished measurements spanning approximately 98 cm (38½ in) to 126 cm (49½ in) across the chest. The sweater has a classic, structured shape with defined armholes and a shaped neckline, making it a versatile wardrobe staple suitable for a wide range of body types.

Construction Techniques

The Breeze sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, worked-flat method, meaning each main piece — the back and front — is knitted separately from the lower hem upward, then seamed together to create the finished garment. This traditional construction approach gives the sweater excellent structure and allows for precise shaping at the armholes and neckline. Knitters familiar with flat knitting will find this method straightforward, as it involves working right-side and wrong-side rows alternately throughout.

The pattern includes armhole shaping achieved through cast-off rows at the beginning of designated rows, and neck shaping worked by dividing stitches and working each shoulder section separately, with remaining stitches placed on stitch holders for later finishing. A cable needle is required throughout to execute the signature cable crossings that define the fabric.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Breeze pattern uses a combination of classic knitting stitches and techniques:

  • 2x1 Rib (K2, P1 rib): The lower hem is worked in a K2, P1 ribbing for approximately 6 cm (2½ in), providing a neat, elastic border that keeps the hem from rolling. This rib is worked over a specific stitch count and repeated on both right-side and wrong-side rows.
  • Knit Front and Back (Kfb): After the ribbed hem, a series of Kfb increases are worked evenly across a right-side row to expand the stitch count before beginning the main cable pattern, ensuring the fabric has the correct stitch multiple for the repeating cable design.
  • C8F (Cable 8 Front): A signature stitch in this pattern, C8F is worked by slipping the next 4 stitches onto a cable needle and holding them at the front of the work, knitting the next 4 stitches from the left needle, then knitting the 4 held stitches from the cable needle. This creates a left-leaning cable cross over 8 stitches.
  • C8B (Cable 8 Back): The mirror of C8F, C8B is worked by slipping 4 stitches onto a cable needle and holding them at the back of the work, knitting the next 4 stitches, then knitting the 4 held stitches. This produces a right-leaning cable cross over 8 stitches.
  • Eight-Row Cable Pattern Repeat: The main fabric is built on an 8-row repeating pattern that alternates between cable crossing rows and plain knit and purl rows. Rows 1, 3, 5, and 7 are purled on the wrong side; Rows 4 and 8 are knitted plain on the right side; Row 2 features C8B crossings and Row 6 features C8F crossings, creating an undulating, textured cable fabric across the entire body of the sweater.
