Product Description
This hat was designed to be an ideal first stranded knitting project. It is meant to cover all of the basic skills that ones needs to do stranded knitting on a small, rewarding project that slowly builds in difficulty. Pattern includes a page of notes for successful stranded knitting.
The Primero Hat never uses more than two colors in the same row and a single color is used for no more than 5 consecutive stitches through most of the color work. A wool or wool blend yarn is recommended for maximum “forgiveness" and memory, especially for a knitter new to stranded knitting.
This pattern requires the knitter to work knit, purl, and decrease stitches in the round for the basic hat shape. Stranded knitting is represented in the color knitting chart. The pattern does not recommend a particular method for knitting in the round.

What is Being Made
The Primero Hat is a beginner-friendly stranded knitting project designed as an ideal introduction to two-color knit work. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished hat suitable for 0-3 months size, making it an accessible first project for knitters looking to build foundational skills in colorwork techniques.
Design and Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Primero Hat is specifically engineered to introduce stranded knitting in a gradual, rewarding manner. The pattern deliberately limits complexity by never using more than two colors in the same row and restricting single color usage to no more than 5 consecutive stitches throughout most of the colorwork sections. This thoughtful construction ensures that new stranded knitters can practice the technique without becoming overwhelmed, while slowly building confidence and skill with each section of the hat.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern requires fundamental knitting skills including:
- Knit stitches worked in the round to form the basic hat structure
- Purl stitches for textural variation and shaping
- Decrease stitches to shape the crown and create the finished hat form
- Stranded knitting (also known as fair isle or two-color knitting), represented through a color knitting chart that guides the colorwork sections
All stitches are worked in the round, allowing knitters to develop proficiency with circular knitting techniques while mastering stranded colorwork fundamentals.
Materials and Gauge
The pattern calls for aran weight yarn, with a wool or wool blend fiber strongly recommended for maximum forgiveness and memory—particularly valuable for knitters new to stranded knitting techniques. Wool and wool blends provide natural elasticity that helps correct minor tension inconsistencies common in colorwork.
Required needles include U.S. Size 4 (3.5 mm) and U.S. Size 6 (4 mm) in circular or appropriate formats for knitting in the round. The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 28 rows over a 4-inch (10 cm) square when working stranded knitting with the larger needles, ensuring proper fit and drape in the finished hat.
