What is Being Made

The Primavera Hat is a luxurious knitted hat designed for discerning beginner brioche knitters. Inspired by the aesthetic of Tuscany in Spring, this design features a cosy construction with a turned-up hem and slouchy fit. The hat is worked in fingering/4ply weight yarn, using approximately 30g of each colour, making it an economical yet elegant project.

Techniques Used

This pattern focuses on brioche knitting, a specialized technique that creates a distinctive textured fabric with exceptional elasticity and visual interest. Brioche knitting involves working with yarn overs and slipped stitches in a coordinated manner to produce the characteristic puffy, reversible appearance. The pattern includes colour work, combining light and dark yarns to create visual depth and dimension. The hat features increases and decreases worked throughout the construction, allowing the designer to shape the slouchy silhouette and create the turned-up hem detail.

Stitches Used

• Brioche Knit (brk): A fundamental brioche stitch that knits a stitch together with its yarn over
• Brioche Knit 2 Together (brk2tog): A decrease technique combining one brioche knit with the following stitch, reducing stitch count by one
• Brioche Increase (br4st inc): An increase method worked as [brk, yo, brk, yo, brk] into the same stitch, increasing stitch count by four
• Brioche Left-Leaning Decrease (brLdec): A directional decrease used to shape the hat
• Yarn Overs (yo): Essential to brioche knitting construction, creating the characteristic texture
• Slipped Stitches: Used in combination with yarn overs, counted as a single stitch in the pattern

Materials

The Primavera Hat is worked in fingering/4ply weight yarn. The pattern specifies two colour options: Light Colour (LC) in Luce (light grey) and Dark Colour (DC) in Ulivi (green), with one skein of each required. The recommended yarns are Lanivendole A Stormy Blend and Lanivendole A Chic Blend, both offering luxurious fibre blends. The Stormy Blend contains 70% Brogna wool and 30% alpaca, providing 225 metres per 50g skein. The Chic Blend combines 60% Brogna wool, 20% alpaca, and 20% mohair, also yielding 225 metres per 50g skein. This fibre composition ensures a soft, breathable hat suitable for spring wear. Standard knitting needles appropriate for fingering/4ply weight yarn are required to complete this project.
