Pretty Little Thing Shawl by Kris of Light and Joy Designs
What is Being Made
The Pretty Little Thing Shawl is a beginner-friendly crochet shawl designed to create an elegant, lacy accessory with minimal complexity. This versatile project works beautifully when crafted with color-changing cake yarn and a slightly larger hook size, producing stunning visual effects without requiring advanced skills. The shawl is adaptable to various yarn weights and hook sizes, making it accessible to crocheters with different preferences and stash materials.
Techniques and Construction
This shawl features a straightforward construction method suitable for beginners entering the world of shawl design. The pattern includes an optional lace edging that appears more intricate than it actually is to execute. True beginners who prefer to avoid the lace edging can simply skip this element entirely, creating an equally lovely finished piece. Alternative finishing options include adding fringe or leaving the shawl as-is without additional embellishment, providing flexibility based on personal preference and skill level.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt, the construction relies on fundamental crochet stitches combined with a decorative lace edging technique. The lace edging, though it may appear challenging to beginners, is designed to be surprisingly straightforward to work, making it an excellent introduction to lace crochet techniques.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Pretty Little Thing Shawl accommodates multiple yarn options and weights, offering flexibility for various crafting preferences:
- Red Heart "It's a Wrap Rainbow" yarn in the "Whisper" colorway, weighing (2) weight at approximately 623 yards per skein
- Lion Brand "Ombre Life" yarn in the "Cloudy Day" colorway, weighing (2) weight at approximately 437 yards per skein
- Woolpedia.net "Colors" 6ply weight yarn in the "Wasserfall" colorway, requiring approximately 800 yards
- Alternative option: 500-800 yards of (2) weight 4-6ply yarn in any color or fiber content of your choice
The pattern recommends using a slightly larger hook when working with plied color-changing cake yarn to achieve the optimal lacy appearance. The yardage requirements range from approximately 400-800 yards depending on the specific yarn weight and hook size selected, allowing crocheters to work with materials already in their collection.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Pretty Little Thing Shawl is designed to be accessible to new crocheters. The optional nature of the lace edging makes it possible to adjust the difficulty level downward by omitting this element, ensuring that even absolute beginners can successfully complete a beautiful finished shawl.
