Product Description
This is my Preemie Baby Very Easy No Heel Rainbow Socks Circular knitting pattern. This sock pattern is very easy because there is no need to make the heels (usually the most difficult part) and the yarn is self striping. The knitting pattern provides full written instructions for 2 preemie baby sizes: S (2-4 lbs) and L (4-6 lbs) and there are numerous step by step photos throughout. They are worked in the round on 5 x2mm short double pointed needles in any self striping 4ply sock yarn. I used West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply sock yarn in RUM PARADISE.

What is Being Made
This is a beginner-friendly circular knitting pattern for preemie baby socks designed by madmonkeyknits. The pattern creates a simple, no-heel sock construction suitable for newborns and small infants weighing between 1-2.75 kg (2-6 lbs). Two sizes are included: Size S for babies weighing 1-2 kg with a foot length of 4-6 cm (1.5-2.5 inches), and Size L for babies weighing 2-2.75 kg with a foot length of 6-9 cm (2.5-3.5 inches). The ankle circumference ranges from 7-10 cm (3-4 inches) depending on size. This pattern is particularly economical, requiring only 15 grams of yarn total for even the largest size from a 100g ball.
Knitting Techniques Used
The socks are constructed using circular knitting on double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless, tubular sock construction worked in continuous rounds. The no-heel design simplifies the pattern significantly, making it ideal for beginners and reducing overall complexity. The pattern employs basic shaping techniques including decreases for sock shaping and make one (M1) increases to add stitches where needed during construction.
Stitches Used
- Stocking Stitch (St.St) – The primary stitch throughout, created by knitting every round to produce a smooth, classic stockinette fabric
- 1x1 Rib – A knit-one, purl-one repeat used for the cuff ribbing to create elasticity and a snug fit around the ankle
- Knit (K) – The fundamental stitch used in most rounds
- Purl (P) – Used in ribbed sections
- Decreases (Dec) – Stitch reductions for shaping the sock
- Slip Stitch (Sl1) – Slipping stitches onto the needle without knitting them
- Make One (M1) – Increases created by picking up the middle strand between stitches and working into it
Materials and Gauge
This pattern calls for 4 ply yarn, with the recommended yarn being West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply in the colorway Rum Paradise. However, any 4 ply sock yarn is suitable as a substitute. Only one 100g ball is needed for both sizes combined, making this an economical project. The pattern requires five 2.00 mm short double-pointed knitting needles (DPNs) for circular construction.
The tension is set at 36 stitches and 48 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stocking stitch on 2.00 mm needles. Achieving correct tension is important for proper sock fit, particularly for preemie sizing where accuracy is essential for comfort and safety.
Pattern Details
This is pattern number 1460 from madmonkeyknits and is presented as a downloadable PDF format. The beginner difficulty level makes it accessible to knitters new to sock construction, while the circular knitting method and no-heel design eliminate some of the more challenging aspects of traditional sock knitting. The pattern is ideal for creating gifts for newborns or for use in hospital settings where preemie-sized garments are needed.
