Poulsen Children's Knit Sweater by HelstrupDesign
What Is Being Made
The Poulsen is a children's knit sweater designed for sizes 4 through 14 years old. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a classic pullover sweater with finished chest measurements ranging from 73 centimeters (for size 4) to 107 centimeters (for size 14), and lengths from 43 to 61 centimeters depending on the child's size. The sweater features colorwork incorporating both a main color and a contrast color, making it a visually interesting garment suitable for everyday wear.
Techniques Used
This advanced-level knitting pattern employs several intermediate to advanced techniques. The sweater is constructed using circular knitting in the round, which creates a seamless fabric and is worked from the body outward. The pattern incorporates colorwork using both a main yarn color and a contrast color, adding visual depth and design interest to the finished piece. Knitters will need to manage multiple yarn colors while maintaining consistent tension and gauge throughout the project. The use of circular needles in different lengths—a 60 or 80 centimeter needle for the body and a shorter 40 centimeter needle or double-pointed needles for the sleeves—demonstrates professional construction methods that minimize seaming.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure for the Poulsen sweater is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern on the right side. The gauge for stockinette stitch is specified as 18 stitches and 27 rows per 10 by 10 centimeters (4 by 4 inches), which is essential information for achieving the correct finished measurements. Achieving proper gauge is emphasized as critical, since every knitter's tension differs. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 132 to 192 stitches depending on size, joined for knitting in the round, indicating the body is worked circularly in stockinette.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Poulsen pattern calls for wool or wool-blend yarn in an aran or DK weight category. Specifically, the pattern recommends yarns such as Peer Gynt or Mor Aase from Sandnes, which are traditional Scandinavian wool yarns offering good stitch definition and durability for children's garments. Yardage requirements are given as 90 meters per 50 grams of yarn.
Yarn quantities vary by size:
- Main color: 200 to 250 grams (sizes 4–6), 250 to 300 grams (sizes 8–10), 300 to 350 grams (size 10), 350 to 400 grams (sizes 12–14)
- Contrast color: 25 to 50 grams (sizes 4–10), 50 to 75 grams (sizes 12–14)
Needles required:
- One 3½ millimeter circular needle, 60 or 80 centimeters in length (24 or 32 inches)
- One 3½ millimeter circular needle, 40 centimeters in length (16 inches), or alternatively 3½ millimeter double-pointed knitting needles
Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends after the sweater is complete. Knitters should select needle size based on their personal gauge rather than assuming the recommended 3½ millimeter size will work universally, as individual tension variations affect the final garment dimensions.
