Product Description

Polka dot shawl is shaped through evenly spaced increases that, simultaneously, create the polka dot pattern. After the shawl is finished the toothed garter edge is worked on to the rounded edge of the shawl.

This semi-circular shawl starts in the centre and is worked out towards the curved edge with the pattern simultaneously shaping the shawl. When the full depth is reached, shawl wings are drawn out with short rows and then the garter edging is worked sideways in short rows as well.

Finished bust circumference: Depth 18in / 46cm. Wingspan 60in / 152cm.

Yarn: 2 balls of JC Rennie Supersoft 4ply. Substitute with approximately 525 yards (480 m) of Fingering weight yarn.

Gauge: 16 stitches and 23 rows = 4 inches in Stocking stitch

Needles and notions: Size 4.0 mm (US 6) circular needle, stitch markers and tapestry needle.

Polka Dot Shawl by Katya Frankel

What is Being Made

The Polka Dot shawl is a triangular knitted shawl designed by independent designer Katya Frankel. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished shawl with a wingspan of 60 inches (152 centimeters) and a depth of 18 inches (46 centimeters), making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap.

Shaping and Design Technique

The distinctive polka dot pattern is created through a clever integration of shaping and stitch work. The shawl is shaped using evenly spaced increases that simultaneously generate the polka dot motif throughout the piece. Double yarn overs are strategically worked on the right side of the pattern on odd-numbered increase rows, creating the characteristic dots while contributing to the overall structure.

The shawl edges are shaped further by increasing along the outer edge of each right side row, with the exception of double yarn over rows. These increases along the edge draw out the wings of the shawl while maintaining straight, aligned edges. After the main knitting is complete, a toothed garter edge is worked onto the rounded edge of the shawl, adding a finished detail and textural interest.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Stocking stitch – the primary fabric stitch used throughout the shawl
  • Garter stitch – used for the finished toothed edge detail
  • Yarn overs – double yarn overs worked on right side rows to create the polka dot pattern and add shaping
  • Increases – evenly spaced increases that form both the polka dots and the triangular shawl shape

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the core stitches—stocking stitch and garter stitch—are fundamental techniques, the pattern requires familiarity with yarn overs and understanding how to work increases strategically to create both shaping and the polka dot design. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions and managing stitch markers to track the increase placements.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The pattern calls for 100 grams (525 yards / 480 meters) of J C Rennie 4ply 100% wool in the colorway Iris #1434. The 4ply weight provides a lightweight, drapable fabric suitable for a shawl while allowing stitch definition for the polka dot pattern to show clearly.

Needles: 4mm (US 6) circular needles are required. Circular needles are used for this project to accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the shawl grows. Stitch markers are also needed to track the increase rows and pattern repeats.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 23 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stocking stitch using 4mm (US 6) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is important for obtaining the finished measurements. Knitters are advised to adjust needle size if necessary to match this gauge before beginning the project.
