Product Description
My 7 year old son Taylan discovered this fuzzy white novelty yarn (King Cole Cuddles) in my stash a while ago and insisted it needed to be knitted into a polar bear! It took me a little while to get round to finishing his ‘commission’ but I’m really thrilled with how this little cutie turned out. Taylan’s little polar bear cub hasn’t left his side since coming off my knitting needles and surprisingly…is still white! (I’m not convinced this last bit will last)
Polar Bear Cub Knitted Toy
Project Overview
The Polar Bear Cub is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Cilla Webb that creates a charming stuffed toy animal. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a soft, cuddly polar bear that measures 45 cm from head to toe when stretched out, or approximately 30 cm in a sitting position. The finished toy is perfect for displaying on shelves, gifting to children, or adding to a collection of handmade stuffed animals.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a three-dimensional polar bear cub toy through knitted construction. The bear features a distinct head and body structure, with details for facial features including eyes. The toy is designed to be stuffed with fiberfill to create a soft, huggable plush animal with realistic proportions and a natural sitting posture.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Polar Bear Cub pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to construct the toy:
- Stocking stitch forms the primary fabric base, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce the smooth, classic knit fabric appearance
- Garter stitch is used for textural variation, created by knitting every row to produce a ridged, bumpy fabric
- Increases are incorporated using knitwise and purlwise methods (Kfb and Pfb) to shape the bear's head and body sections
- Decreases are worked using knit two together (K2tog) and purl two together (P2tog) techniques to taper and shape various sections
- Casting on and binding off techniques create the foundation and finished edges of each knitted piece
- Seaming with a tapestry needle joins the individual knitted pieces together to form the complete three-dimensional toy
- Stuffing is added between seaming to create the plush, dimensional quality of the finished bear
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and stitch types:
- K – knit stitch (or knit a specified number of stitches when followed by a number)
- P – purl stitch
- St st – stocking stitch, the fundamental fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows
- G st – garter stitch, created by knitting every row
- K2tog – knit two stitches together knitwise, a right-leaning decrease
- P2tog – purl two stitches together purlwise, a decrease worked on purl rows
- Kfb – knit in the front and back of a stitch, creating an increase of one stitch
- Pfb – purl in the front and back of a stitch, creating an increase on purl rows
The pattern uses bracket notation [instructions] x times to indicate repetition of stitch sequences, and asterisk notation * instructions ; to indicate sections that repeat to the end of a row.
Materials and Yarn
The Polar Bear Cub pattern specifies King Cole Cuddles DK yarn in White as the primary material, requiring approximately 100 grams total, which equals 2 skeins of this yarn weight. DK (double knitting) weight yarn is a medium-weight yarn that works well for toys, providing good stitch definition and durability. Small scrap amounts of black and white DK yarn are needed for embroidering or attaching the bear's eyes, adding facial character to the finished toy.
Tools and Supplies
The pattern requires 3.5mm straight knitting needles as the primary tool, which is the appropriate needle size for DK weight yarn and creates fabric with good structure for a stuffed toy. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for seaming the knitted pieces together and weaving in yarn ends, and polyester fiberfill stuffing to fill the completed bear and create its three-dimensional shape. The stuffing is essential for transforming the flat knitted pieces into a soft, huggable toy.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who
