Pluma Seamless Modular Shawl by Inês Sousa

What Is Being Made

Pluma is a seamless shawl designed and created by Inês Sousa for Seni Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished shawl measuring 150 x 56 cm (59 x 22 inches). The shawl is worked in a modular construction method, allowing knitters to customize the final piece by adjusting the number of modules incorporated into the design.

Construction Method and Techniques

Pluma employs a distinctive bottom-up modular approach to shawl construction. The pattern begins with a single initial module, and all subsequent modules are created by picking up stitches or casting on new stitches directly from previously completed sections as you knit. This seamless building method eliminates the need for seaming and creates a cohesive, integrated fabric. The modular structure offers significant customization potential—the pattern as written includes 28 full modules and 8 half-modules, but knitters can easily modify the shawl's dimensions by working additional or fewer modules according to their preferences.

The pattern recommends using Jenny's Stretchy slip-knot cast-on throughout, as this flexible casting method provides the elasticity needed for the modular transitions and ensures even tension across the picked-up stitches.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The gauge specification indicates that Stockinette stitch forms the foundation of this design. Working at a gauge of 14 stitches over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in Stockinette stitch with 4.5 mm (US 7) needles establishes the fabric's drape and structure. The modular construction technique requires proficiency with stitch pickup methods and basic increases or decreases to shape each module.

Materials and Needle Requirements

Pluma requires approximately 444.3 to 510.9 meters (485.8 to 558.7 yards) of worsted weight yarn, providing flexibility in yardage based on the final customization choices. The pattern calls for specific needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction:

  • 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles for the main knitting
  • 5.5 mm (US 9) double-pointed needles for binding off

Additional materials needed include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, blocking pins for finishing, and either waste yarn or a long circular needle for stitch holders during construction.

The designer encourages knitters to select yarn thoughtfully to personalize their Pluma shawl. Suitable yarn choices include rustic or hand-spun varieties, variegated colorways, or solid colors in unexpected hues—any of these options will showcase the modular construction and create a truly individual finished piece.

Pattern Notes

This downloadable PDF pattern is written for intermediate-level knitters who are comfortable with seamless construction, stitch pickup techniques, and following multi-step modular instructions. Careful reading of the complete pattern before beginning is recommended to understand the module sequence and any shaping details. The customizable nature of the design makes it an excellent project for knitters seeking to create a personalized accessory while developing their technical skills.
