Product Description
Introducing my Plum Tomatoes knitting pattern. Botanically tomatoes are a fruit, but they are usually considered a vegetable in cookery. Knitted veggies are super toys to encourage little ones to eat veg and greens, or you can use them as decorative items in your home. My veggies are worked flat, but most pieces could easily be converted to knitting in the round if that is your preference. You will also need to cast on and off, knit, purl, work increases and decreases, and sew a seam.
Plum Tomatoes Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
The Plum Tomatoes pattern creates small knitted toy tomatoes, each measuring 5.5cm tall (not including the leaves and stalk). These are decorative plush toys often referred to as "sauce tomatoes" that evoke the variety used in pasta sauces. The pattern produces individual tomato pieces that can be made in multiples.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project designed for beginner level crafters. The pattern uses fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The tomatoes are constructed using basic shaping methods to create a three-dimensional toy form from flat knitted fabric.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – the foundational stitch used throughout the pattern
- Knit into the front and back (kfb) – an increase technique to add stitches and create shaping
- Knit two stitches together (k2tog) – a decrease technique to reduce stitches and shape the tomato form
- Make 1 (M1) – an additional increase method for stitch creation
Materials
The pattern requires DK weight yarn (double knitting or light worsted weight minimum). Specifically, Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK, which is 100% acrylic, is recommended. You will need less than 25g in each colour: Red (shade "Signal Red") for the tomato body and Green (shade "Bottle Green") for the leaves and stalk.
Additional materials include a pair of 2.75mm (US 2) straight knitting needles with a minimum length of 20cm, a tapestry needle for seaming the pieces together, a few handfuls of toy filling for stuffing, and two 8mm toy safety eyes per tomato for facial features.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 6 stitches by 8 rows per 2.5cm square. Each completed tomato is one size, standing 5.5cm tall when excluding the leaves and stalk components.
