Product Description
The (duck-billed) platypus is one of Australia’s most peculiar residents. If you were to put a duck, a beaver and an otter in a blender, this is what might come out!
The platypus is fairly easy to knit, with one sequence of short rows.
For the platypus in the photos 2.5 mm double pointed needles (UK 12) were used.
It measures 23 cm from bill to tail.
This example was made with Rowan Felted Tweed yarns - treacle (145) for the body, carbon (159) for the bill - which give the body a textured appearance.
The body is knit in one circular piece, starting at the bottom of the tail, and folded afterwards.

Platypus Knitted Toy by AnimalKnitdom
What Is Being Made
This is a knitted platypus toy, a small stuffed animal inspired by the Australian monotreme Ornithorhynchus anatinus. The finished toy measures 23 cm from bill to tail, making it a compact, huggable companion. Despite the real platypus being a venomous creature, this woolly interpretation is entirely good-natured and beginner-friendly to create.
Design Inspiration and Characteristics
The platypus is one of nature's most unusual animals—a mammal that lays eggs and combines features of a duck, beaver, and otter. This knitted version captures the charm of the creature without its dangerous attributes, making it an ideal subject for a beginner knitting project. The toy features a distinctive duck-like bill, a textured body, and an underside in contrasting yarn.
Yarn Materials
The pattern uses Rowan Felted Tweed yarns in the original design, specifically treacle (145) for the body and carbon (159) for the bill, which create a pleasingly textured appearance. The suggested yarn weights and yardages are:
- 15 grams (52.5 meters) of chocolate yarn for the body
- 10 grams (35 meters) of antique white yarn for the underside
- 5 grams (17.5 meters) of charcoal yarn for the bill
- One strand of beige yarn for embellishment details
These are estimations, and knitters are encouraged to substitute their own yarn colors and create custom color schemes while maintaining similar yarn weights.
Needles and Tools
This pattern calls for 2.5 mm double pointed needles (UK size 12). Double pointed needles are essential for knitting small, tubular pieces in the round, which is the typical construction method for toy projects like this platypus.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided content, the construction of a small stuffed toy typically involves fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. Working with double pointed needles allows the knitter to create seamless, three-dimensional forms by knitting in continuous rounds. The varied yarn colors are incorporated to create distinct body sections—the main body, the contrasting underside, and the characteristic bill—each likely knitted as separate pieces or color changes within the same piece, then assembled and stuffed.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as beginner level, making it an excellent introduction to toy knitting for those new to the craft. The straightforward construction and use of basic knitting techniques mean that even novice knitters can successfully complete this charming platypus.
