Product Description
Hope - Courage - Strength - Love
The pink ribbon means a lot of things to a lot of people. But first and foremost it's the undisputable symbol of breast cancer awareness. Every 69 seconds another woman dies from breast cancer. Take a minute, let that sink in. Every 69 seconds.
The name for this shawl was suggested by Kristen during my Boobie Blitz Fundraiser for my Komen 3-Day for the Cure. I think rising from the ashes and rebirth is a perfect sort of symbolism for cancer survivors. $2 from the sale of each pattern goes to the Komen Foundation.
The Pink Phoenix shawlette is worked up in one skein of Malabrigo Sock in the Light of Love colorway. Could it be a more perfect choice? This is a shallow, shaped shawlette that is worked from the top down with a picot edging along the sides and a deep pointed edging along the bottom.
Pink Phoenix Shawlette by Corrina Ferguson
What Is Being Made
The Pink Phoenix is a shawlette designed by Corrina Ferguson for PicnicKnits. This is a shallow, shaped shawl worked from the top down, featuring a meaningful design inspired by breast cancer awareness symbolism. The shawlette incorporates picot edging along the sides and a deep pointed edging along the bottom, creating an elegant and dimensional finished piece. The design celebrates themes of hope, courage, strength, and love, with particular significance to cancer survivors and the symbolism of rising from the ashes and rebirth.
Construction and Techniques
The Pink Phoenix shawlette employs a top-down construction method, which allows the knitter to shape the garment as they work from the neck or shoulder area downward. This approach provides flexibility in the final dimensions and makes it easy to try on during the knitting process. The shawlette features two distinct edging techniques: picot edging runs along the sides, creating a decorative scalloped or pointed detail, while a deep pointed edging adorns the bottom of the piece, adding visual interest and an elegant silhouette.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs a range of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches to create texture and shaping:
- Knit (k) – The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (p) – Used to create texture and reversible fabric elements
- Knit front and back (kfb) – An increase technique that adds stitches for shaping
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – A right-leaning decrease used for shaping and creating decorative details
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – A left-leaning decrease that pairs with k2tog for balanced decreases
- Yarn over (yo) – Creates deliberate holes and lace elements, essential for picot edging and decorative openwork
- Slip one, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over (sk2p) – A double decrease that creates a centered reduction, often used in lace patterns
- Slip marker (sm) – Used to track pattern repeats and construction sections
Materials and Yarn
The Pink Phoenix shawlette is designed to be completed with a single skein of yarn, making it an efficient project. The pattern calls for Malabrigo Sock yarn in the Light of Love colorway. Malabrigo Sock is available in both 3-ply and 4-ply weights, providing options for different gauges and final dimensions. This yarn choice is particularly meaningful given the shawl's breast cancer awareness theme, as the Light of Love colorway complements the symbolism of the pink ribbon. The sock-weight yarn creates a delicate, refined fabric suitable for a shallow shawlette that drapes beautifully.
Difficulty Level
The Pink Phoenix is rated as an intermediate difficulty project. While the individual stitches used are accessible to knitters with basic skills, the combination of techniques—particularly the lace elements created by yarn overs and decreases, along with the shaped construction and multiple edging types—requires intermediate-level understanding of pattern reading and stitch manipulation. Knitters should be comfortable with increasing and decreasing, managing yarn overs in sequence, and following a multi-part pattern structure.
