Phil's Crochet Blanket by Amanda Perkins

Project Overview

Phil's Crochet Blanket is a versatile, modular crochet design created by independent designer Amanda Perkins. This blanket project showcases a creative approach to using yarn scraps, combining hundreds of different colored and textured yarns into a cohesive, visually striking finished piece. The designer invested 18 months in creating this blanket while managing multiple concurrent projects, resulting in a thoughtfully constructed design that celebrates the beauty of mixed yarn sources.

What Is Being Made

This is a large crochet blanket constructed from individual motifs that are joined together to create a complete throw or bed covering. The design features a central panel as its foundation, with the option to add decorative border sections to achieve different finished sizes. The blanket is built using a modular approach, where each small motif measures approximately 2.5 inches, allowing crafters flexibility in customizing their final dimensions.

Size Options

Phil's Crochet Blanket can be customized to three different finished sizes, depending on how many borders the crocheter chooses to add:

  • Lap Size: Central panel only, measuring 43 x 43 inches
  • Double Size: Central panel plus border stars, measuring 68 x 68 inches
  • King Size: Complete design with all borders, measuring 82 x 82 inches

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level crochet project employs a motif-based construction method, where small individual pieces are crocheted separately and then joined together. The modular design approach allows crafters to work on manageable sections before assembling them into the larger blanket. The inclusion of decorative border stars adds visual interest and dimension to the larger size options, demonstrating how strategic border placement can transform the overall aesthetic of the finished piece.

Materials and Yarn

Phil's Crochet Blanket is designed as the ultimate scrap yarn project, utilizing 4-ply weight yarn. The blanket incorporates hundreds of different scrap yarns and odds-and-ends from various sources, making it an excellent pattern for crafters looking to use leftover yarn from previous projects. Yarn sources referenced in the pattern include The Natural Dye Studio, Fyberspates, John Arbon Textiles, Little Grey Sheep, Drops, Easy Knits, Skein Queen, Knitting Goddess, Cascade, King Cole, and Five Moons. The pattern provides complete yarn quantity specifications for each finished size option.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated at intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience who are comfortable working with basic stitches and joining techniques. The modular construction and clear sizing options make this an accessible project for those looking to expand their skills beyond beginner-level patterns.
