Product Description
Hi!
Petal Dance was designed for the intermediate sock knitter in mind. I have so many designs that cater to the beginner knitter, that THIS will be for YOU, the intermediate knitter.
Not hard. At all. Some fun stitches, which I've described in detail within the pattern. I use my favorite heel and toe, but feel free to go rogue. This pattern is adaptable.
So, grab your favorite yarn, US size 1, beverage of choice, Netflix, and cast on.
While I have MANY favorite sock yarn brands, this one was knit with Malabrigo. I love how it knits.
As always, I have you mind when creating my next design.
I’ve been designing since 2009, and have loved every minute!!
Knit On!
Petal Dance Socks by Deb Buckingham
What is Being Made
Petal Dance Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Deb Buckingham for Knit On Designs. This project creates a pair of socks using the round knitting method, suitable for knitters with intermediate skill levels who are ready to explore decorative stitch work beyond basic stockinette construction.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project worked in the round using double-pointed needles (DPNs). The pattern was originally written for DPNs, though experienced sock knitters can adapt the design for Magic Loop or 9-inch circular needles if preferred. The intermediate difficulty level reflects the decorative stitch techniques incorporated throughout the sock, which add visual interest while remaining accessible to knitters who have mastered basic sock construction fundamentals.
Stitches Used
The Petal Dance Socks pattern employs several key stitches to create its distinctive appearance:
- Knit (K) — the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (P) — used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and pattern definition
- Yarn Over (YO) — creates decorative openings and lace elements characteristic of the petal motif
- S2KP2 (Slip 2, Knit 1, Pass Slipped Stitches Over) — a decrease technique that creates elegant stitch reductions within the pattern
These stitches work together to produce the "petal" visual elements that give this sock design its name and character.
Materials and Specifications
The Petal Dance Socks pattern requires fingering weight yarn (3-ply), which is the standard weight for sock knitting and ensures proper fit and durability. The sample was knit using Malabrigo Yarn Sock, a merino blend that provides softness and elasticity ideal for socks.
Needles required are US 1/2.25 mm, sized appropriately for fingering weight yarn. The pattern specifies a gauge of 7-8 stitches per inch, which should be checked before beginning to ensure proper sock dimensions and fit.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes detailed stitch instructions, abbreviations, and photographs to guide knitters through the construction process. The designer provides clear explanations of all stitches used, making the intermediate techniques accessible even to knitters encountering them for the first time in a sock context.
