Product Description
We're taking a wonderful road trip around the state of Pennsylvania in the United States, celebrating knitting and local yarn shops and American history and natural wonders and PA landmarks as we go. We hope you'll join us on this grand adventure. This pattern is sized for misses (up to a 50" bust) or plus (over a 50" bust). The pattern is oversized for both sizes. There are 8 "legs" of the journey. At each leg, you will choose between Cynthia's design or Valerie's design, for a "choose your own adventure" shawl! The pattern has line-by-line instructions for most clues, plus explanations of the sights that were the inspiration. You'll need 4 skeins of fingering-weight yarn that are at least 400 yards (you'll need 5 for the plus size). One should be a variegated. Two should be medium in tone, but contrast with each other, and the fourth should be lighter or darker than the rest.
Pennsylvania Road Trip Knit Shawl by Cynthia Spencer
What is Being Made
The Pennsylvania Road Trip is a knit shawl designed by Cynthia Spencer in collaboration with photographer and pattern contributor Valerie Reed. This shawl takes inspiration from scenic sights encountered during a road trip around Pennsylvania, translating those visual experiences into a beautiful knitted garment. The shawl is available in two size options: misses and plus sizes, with the plus size recommended for individuals with a 50-inch or greater bust measurement. Both versions are designed to be roomy and comfortable for everyday wear.
Design Features and Pattern Structure
The Pennsylvania Road Trip shawl features a unique interactive design approach with eight main pattern sections. Throughout the knitting process, crafters encounter diverging paths at each of these eight legs of the journey, allowing them to choose between two distinct design options: Cynthia's version or Valerie's version. This creative structure gives knitters the opportunity to personalize their finished shawl by selecting their preferred stitch patterns and design elements at each stage, making every Pennsylvania Road Trip shawl potentially unique.
Techniques and Stitches Used
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the available pattern documentation, the Pennsylvania Road Trip employs intermediate-level knitting techniques appropriate for knitters with some experience beyond basic skills. The pattern's structure of multiple design sections with diverging options suggests the use of various stitch patterns that can be adapted and combined throughout the project.
Materials Required
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a versatile medium weight suitable for creating a shawl with good drape and structure. Knitters will need appropriate needles sized for 4-ply yarn, though specific needle sizes and yardage requirements are detailed within the full downloadable PDF pattern.
Pattern Format
The Pennsylvania Road Trip is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it easy to access and print for reference while knitting. The pattern includes both written instructions and photographs by Valerie Reed to guide knitters through each section and design choice.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is well-suited for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to explore more complex stitch patterns and shaping. The multiple design choices throughout the pattern add an engaging creative element while remaining manageable for intermediate-level crafters.
