Product Description
Pelophylax is the generic name for water frogs. The colours of the socks inspired me to use this name.
The socks are worked toe-up. They are really cosy due to the slip stitch pattern on both sides of the foot but not too thick – apart from that I just love “my” diamond slip stitch pattern…
The instructions are written for using a circular needle as magic loop but you can use double pointed needles as well. It’s up to you!
You can use any sock yarn in two colours. The main colour should be solid. The result will be particularly beautiful if you use a variegated or self-striping yarn as contrast colour.
Size can be adjusted easily.
**Yarn requirements:**You can use any sock yarn that fits the gauge (needle 2.5mm/US1.5) estimated yardage for EU 40/US 8.5 / UK6.5: Main Colour - 165 meters (180 yards) Contrast Colour - 101 meters (110.5 yards) The yardage depends on the size you knit.
Pelophylax Water Frog Socks by Frl. Staedtisch
What is Being Made
Pelophylax socks are a pair of cosy, toe-up knitted socks inspired by the natural colours of water frogs (Pelophylax genus). The design combines two contrasting yarn colours to create a visually striking finished garment. These socks are worked from the toe upward, offering a modern construction method that allows for precise fit adjustments.
Knitting Techniques Used
The socks feature a distinctive slip stitch pattern worked on both sides of the foot, creating texture and visual interest while maintaining a comfortable, non-bulky fit. The designer particularly highlights her signature diamond slip stitch pattern, which forms the decorative element throughout the sock construction. The pattern is designed for flexibility in needle choice: instructions are provided for working with a circular needle using the magic loop method, though double pointed needles are equally suitable as an alternative.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Slip stitch pattern: Applied on both sides of the foot to create texture and visual definition
- Diamond slip stitch pattern: The signature decorative motif throughout the design
- Double stitch (Ds): A German short needle technique incorporated into the pattern
- Cast on: Toe-up construction begins with a cast-on edge
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Pelophylax socks are designed for 4-ply sock yarn in two contrasting colours. For EU40/US8.5/UK6.5 sizing, the pattern requires approximately 50g of sock yarn in each colour maximum. Specifically, the main colour (MC) requires 40g (165m/180y), while the contrast colour (CC) requires 25g (110m/110y). The designer recommends using a solid main colour paired with either a variegated or self-striping contrast yarn to achieve particularly beautiful results. Knitting needles required are 2.5mm (US2) and 3.5mm circular needles or double pointed needles of the same sizes.
Difficulty Level and Pattern Format
Pelophylax socks are rated as intermediate difficulty, making them suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle textured stitch patterns and two-colour work. The pattern is provided as a free downloadable PDF, offering accessible instructions for home crafters.
