Peachy Blinder Shawl by Helda Panagary
What is Being Made
The Peachy Blinder Shawl is a reversible crochet shawl designed by Helda Panagary. This intermediate-level project draws inspiration from the vibrant colorways of hand-dyed yarn, featuring the warm tones of ripe peaches contrasted with cool denim blue. The finished shawl is embellished with five neon orange pom-poms for added visual interest and texture.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This shawl employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The pattern utilizes several core stitches and construction methods:
- Chain stitch (ch): Used to create the foundation and spacing throughout the pattern
- Treble crochet (tr): The primary stitch that forms the fabric structure
- Tr2tog (treble crochet two together): A decrease stitch that creates shaping and texture variation
- Chain space (ch-sp): The openings created by chain stitches, which are worked into on subsequent rows
- Yarn over hook (yoh): The fundamental motion used in all crochet stitches
The pattern begins with an adjustable ring, allowing for customizable sizing. The shawl is constructed in rows with turning chains, and the designer recommends using row counters to track pattern repeats and total row numbers for accuracy.
Materials and Tools
The Peachy Blinder Shawl is designed to showcase hand-dyed yarns from The Wool Kitchen. The yarn specifications are:
- Yarn Weight: 4-ply weight (also suitable for 3-ply, sport, DK, aran, cobweb, and lace weights depending on desired drape and finished size)
- Yarn Fiber Content: 50% merino wool and 50% silk blend
- Yardage: 100g per skein, yielding 400 meters or 437 yards
- Yarn A (Worn Denim): 1 skein of the cool-toned denim colorway
- Yarn B (Nectar Baby): 1 skein of the warm peachy colorway
- Hook Size: 4mm crochet hook
- Additional Embellishments: Five neon orange pom-poms for finishing
Pattern Notes and Tension
Exact tension is not critical for this shawl design, making it forgiving for crocheters still developing consistent stitch tension. The pattern emphasizes the use of row counters to maintain accuracy with pattern repeats and to track the total number of rows completed, which is particularly helpful when working with the reversible construction that showcases both colorways.
