Patricia Poncho in Adriafil Pepe – Free Knitting Pattern (Downloadable PDF)

The Patricia Poncho is a beautifully shaped, super-chunky knitted poncho designed for a relaxed, cosy fit. Available in three sizes — Small, Medium, and Large — this free downloadable PDF pattern from Adriafil produces a stylish layering piece with a textured body, a neat center back seam, and a playful fringe along the lower edge. The design is worked flat and shaped through a series of gradual decreases that create a gently tapered silhouette from hem to shoulder.

What Is Being Made

The finished garment is a poncho, knitted flat in one main panel and seamed at the center back. The piece begins wide at the lower edge and is shaped through multiple rounds of evenly spaced decreases worked at regular intervals as the piece grows in length. The upper portion transitions into a smooth Stockinette stitch yoke, finished with a few rows of Garter stitch at the top edge before binding off. A fringe made from cut strands of yarn is attached along the lower hem for a decorative finish.

Construction and Shaping

The poncho is cast on with 102, 108, or 114 stitches depending on the chosen size and is worked upward in the signature Pattern stitch. Decreases are introduced at measured intervals — at 18 cm, 24 cm, 30 cm, 36 cm, and 41–43 cm — reducing the stitch count progressively down to 54 stitches. An important construction note in the pattern instructs knitters to shift the placement of decreases so they do not always fall at the same position across the width, which helps create a smooth, even shaping rather than visible decrease lines. Once the stitch count reaches 54, the upper section is worked in plain Stockinette stitch until the piece reaches 58–60 cm in total length. Four final rows of Garter stitch complete the top edge before binding off. The center back seam is sewn during finishing to bring the poncho into its final form.

Stitches Used

  • Pattern Stitch: The main textured stitch used throughout the body of the poncho. It begins with 3 knit rows, then alternates between 4 rows of Garter stitch and 4 rows of Stockinette stitch, repeated throughout. This combination creates a subtle, rhythmic texture that adds visual interest without being overly complex.
  • Garter Stitch: Worked by knitting every row on both right and wrong sides. Used within the Pattern stitch sequence and also as a finishing border at the top edge of the poncho. Garter stitch creates a flat, ridged fabric that lies naturally without curling.
  • Stockinette Stitch: Worked by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side. Used both within the Pattern stitch repeat and as the sole stitch for the upper yoke section of the poncho. Stockinette produces the classic smooth knitted fabric surface.

Techniques Used

  • Casting on a large number of stitches to establish the wide lower hem
  • Evenly spaced decreasing worked at multiple length intervals to shape the poncho from wide to narrow
  • Stitch pattern transitioning — moving from the textured Pattern stitch into plain Stockinette and then Garter stitch as the piece progresses
  • Fringe making — cutting 25 cm strands of yarn and attaching them along the lower edge for a decorative finish
  • Seaming — sewing the center back seam to complete the garment
  • Gauge checking — the pattern specifically advises knitters to check gauge and switch needle size if necessary before beginning
