Parapapá Socks by Merche Hernández

What is Being Made

The Parapapá Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Merche Hernández and published by Teconlana in April 2021. These socks are inspired by a textured beige jacket that the designer's mother knitted over 40 years ago, and the pattern allows knitters to create matching socks that coordinate with similar garments. The design celebrates family heritage and the longevity of well-made knitwear, making them a meaningful handmade gift project.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Parapapá Socks employ several intermediate sock construction techniques that create a comfortable, well-fitting garment. The pattern is written using a toe-up construction method, which begins at the toe and works toward the cuff. This approach offers advantages including the ability to try on the sock as you knit and the flexibility to adjust length before binding off.

The sock features mini gusset increases, a technique that adds extra stitches along the sides of the foot to accommodate the ankle and leg while maintaining a smooth transition from the foot to the leg. The heel is constructed using a German short row heel, a modern technique that creates a smooth, anatomically shaped heel without the need for a traditional heel flap. Short rows are partial rows worked back and forth to build up heel height gradually, resulting in a comfortable fit and reduced bulk.

Stitches and Stitch Details

While the complete stitch pattern is not detailed in the provided content, the pattern incorporates textured stitching that echoes the distinctive texture found in the original jacket that inspired the design. The socks are designed to be knitted with standard sock yarn using appropriate needle size for the yarn weight, with gauge being an important consideration for proper fit.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Sock yarn in 4-ply weight (fingering weight), suitable for creating durable, wearable socks
  • Needles: Size 2.25 mm needles or the size required to achieve the correct gauge for your chosen yarn
  • Format: Downloadable PDF pattern for easy reference during knitting

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner project, the Parapapá Socks are accessible to knitters new to sock construction. The toe-up method and clear pattern instructions make this an excellent introduction to sock knitting, despite the use of techniques like short row heels that might seem advanced. The pattern provides guidance on needle size and gauge to ensure successful results.
