Paradis Sweater in Viking Garn – Pattern Summary (UK-2324-6)

The Paradis Sweater is a charming children's yoke sweater designed by Turid Stapnes and published by Viking of Norway under pattern number UK-2324-6. Worked in a cheerful yellow colourway, this pullover is an ideal project for intermediate knitters looking to practise seamless construction and classic raglan shaping on a wearable, practical garment sized for children.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a children's pullover sweater with a raglan yoke, available in five sizes to fit ages and chest circumferences as follows:

  • Size 2: 57 cm / 22½ in chest circumference, 33 cm / 13 in whole length, 12 cm / 4¾ in sleeve length
  • Size 4: 64 cm / 25¼ in chest circumference, 36 cm / 14¼ in whole length, 14 cm / 5½ in sleeve length
  • Size 6: 70 cm / 27½ in chest circumference, 44 cm / 17¼ in whole length, 15 cm / 6 in sleeve length
  • Size 8: 76 cm / 30 in chest circumference, 48 cm / 19 in whole length, 16 cm / 6¼ in sleeve length
  • Size 10/12: 83 cm / 32¾ in chest circumference, 51 cm / 20 in whole length, 18 cm / 7 in sleeve length

The finished sweater is a classic, everyday children's knit with clean lines and a comfortable fit, making it a versatile addition to any child's wardrobe.

Construction Technique

The Paradis Sweater is constructed using seamless, in-the-round knitting with a top-down or yoke-based assembly approach. The defining structural feature is the raglan yoke, in which the body and sleeves are joined onto a single circular needle and worked together, with decreases made at four evenly spaced raglan lines to simultaneously shape the armholes and the upper body.

At the yoke stage, all sections — the body and both sleeves — are combined onto the same 3½ mm needle, beginning with a total stitch count that ranges from 182 to 282 stitches in the round depending on the size being worked. Stitch markers are placed at all four joins to keep the raglan decrease points clearly identified throughout.

The raglan shaping is achieved through a combination of two classic decrease techniques worked at every other round: a slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skp or sl1-k1-psso) on one side of each marker, and a knit two together (k2tog) on the other side, resulting in a neat, mirrored decrease of 8 stitches per decrease round. This is repeated across 11 to 22 raglan decrease rounds depending on the size.

Once sufficient raglan rounds have been worked, the front neckline stitches (ranging from 10 to 16 stitches at centre front) are placed on a stitch holder, and the work transitions from in-the-round to back-and-forth (flat) knitting in stocking stitch to complete the neckline shaping.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) – the primary stitch used throughout the yoke and body, worked in the round as knit every round, and back and forth as knit on right side, purl on wrong side
  • Slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (sl1-k1-psso / skp) – a left-leaning decrease used at the raglan shaping points
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used at the raglan shaping points to create the mirrored raglan lines

The combination of these two decrease types at each of the
