Product Description
This fingering weight shawl is created using two very unique "cluster" stitches. I think you'll find it fun to make and to wear. The cluster stitches add a dimension to the shawl that's rarely seen in knitting pattern, and the stitches are also integrated with a Japanese ladder stitch. The result is a unique and elegant shawl.
The shawl was designed in a unique way, and no grafting or kitchener stitch is required.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming lace knitting experience)
The border and focal stitch are both charted only.
The shawl was co-designed with, and expertly tested by Page Page Zelasko
Handmaiden's Casbah yarn was used in the sample however, any heavy weight fingering yarn or sport weight yarn wll work for this pattern.
No crochet hooks are needed if you do not want to crochet an edging.

What Is Being Made
Page's Cluster Shawl is a wearable knitted wrap designed by Linda Lehman and Page Zelaski. This intermediate-level shawl combines Japanese knitting techniques with lace construction to create a sophisticated accessory. The finished piece features intricate cluster and lace patterns that showcase advanced stitch work while remaining achievable for experienced knitters with lace knitting knowledge.
Construction and Design
This shawl uses a unique construction method that requires careful attention to the pattern instructions before beginning. The design incorporates two distinct Japanese stitches that work together harmoniously throughout the piece. The focal stitch is a cable lace stitch that may be unfamiliar to many American knitters, though it knits up relatively easily when you maintain careful tracking of cluster positions.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Cable Lace Stitch: The primary focal stitch featuring cable-based lace work that creates visual interest and texture
- Japanese Stitches: Two different Japanese knitting techniques are combined within the shawl design
- Lace Knitting: The shawl requires foundational knowledge of lace knitting techniques and pattern reading
- Cluster Stitches: Positioned clusters require careful tracking throughout the knitting process
Materials and Tools Required
For the Main Wrap: The shawl requires 1250 to 1450 yards of sport weight yarn, typically fingering weight yarn for the appropriate drape and delicacy. Knitting needles in sizes U.S. #5 (3.75mm) and U.S. #6 (4.00mm) are needed for the main construction. Additional tools include a cable needle for cable stitch work, a tapestry needle for finishing, and stitch markers and row counter (both optional but recommended for tracking progress through the complex pattern).
For the Edging: Approximately 100 yards of coordinating or matching yarn is needed for the finished edging. Size H and I crochet hooks are used to complete the crocheted edge, adding a polished finish to the shawl.
Gauge and Finishing
The shawl is worked to approximately 5 stitches per inch in the focal stitch. The finished piece requires fairly aggressive blocking to achieve the intended cable lace stitch definition and shawl drape. This blocking step is essential for revealing the full beauty of the Japanese stitch work and cluster patterns.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty and assumes the knitter has prior knowledge of lace knitting. The cable lace stitch and Japanese techniques, while not overly complex, require attention to detail and comfort reading lace charts and tracking stitch positions throughout the project.
