Pacific Sport Essential Baby Set – Knitting Pattern Summary (Cascade Yarns DK580)

Designed by Kay Meadors and published by Cascade Yarns, the Pacific Sport Essential Baby Set (pattern code DK580) is a charming coordinated knitting pattern for babies and newborns. The downloadable PDF includes instructions for two complementary projects: a classic baby cardigan and a pair of baby booties. Projects Included in This Pattern

Baby Cardigan

The baby cardigan is a sweet, wearable layering piece sized to fit newborns through nine-month-old babies. Three sizes are provided with the following finished chest measurements:

  • Newborn – 15½ inches
  • 3–6 Months – 17 inches
  • 6–9 Months – 18¾ inches

The cardigan is a classic baby knit, designed to be practical and soft against delicate skin. It features a button closure using a single ½-inch button, making it easy to dress and undress a wriggling infant. The construction uses a combination of flat and circular knitting techniques, taking advantage of both a 12"–20" US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle and US 5 (3.75 mm) double pointed needles (DPNs).

The primary fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knitted surface ideal for baby garments. The gauge for this pattern is 22 stitches × 30 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, so swatching before beginning is strongly recommended, especially when sizing is important for a growing baby.

Key techniques and stitches used in the cardigan include:

  • Stockinette stitch – the main fabric stitch, worked by alternating knit and purl rows
  • KFB (Knit into the Front and Back) – a simple increase stitch used to add stitches and shape the garment
  • M1 (Make 1) – another increase technique for smooth, nearly invisible shaping
  • K2tog (Knit 2 Together) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Bind off (BO) and Cast on (CO) – standard techniques for beginning and finishing sections
  • Use of stitch holders to hold live stitches while working other sections
  • Use of stitch markers to track pattern sections and shaping points

Baby Booties

The matching baby booties are worked to a single size with finished dimensions of 1¾ inches wide × 3¼ inches long, making them suitable for newborn to early infant feet. The booties are knitted in the round using US 4 (3.5 mm) double pointed needles (DPNs), which are slightly smaller than those used for the cardigan, helping to create a firmer, more structured fabric that holds its shape on tiny feet.

The booties are a wonderful introduction to small-circumference knitting in the round and involve shaping techniques similar to those used in the cardigan. For display or gifting purposes, the pattern notes that a small amount of fiberfill, cotton balls, and cardboard can be used to stuff and shape the booties for presentation — a lovely touch when preparing them as a gift set.

Techniques used in the booties include:

  • Knitting in the round on double pointed needles
  • Increases and decreases to shape the toe and heel
  • Standard cast on, bind off, and finishing with a yarn needle
