What is Being Made

The Ossett Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Rowan, available in multiple sizes to fit foot circumferences of 20 cm, 23 cm, and 26 cm. These socks are constructed using the top-down method, with customizable foot length to suit individual preferences. The pattern is suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level.

Techniques Used

This sock pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques. Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric throughout most of the sock. The pattern incorporates stitch charts (Strickschrift A and B) to guide color work or textured pattern placement. The heel is constructed using the heel flap method, worked flat in rows with a slip-stitch edge that creates a reinforced, durable heel. The heel flap uses a combination of knit and purl stitches in alternating rows to create a textured, elastic fabric. Decreases are worked strategically to shape the sock, with one stitch decreased at the end of the leg section to achieve the final stitch count of 67 (75: 83) stitches. Knitters may use the Magic Loop technique as an alternative to traditional double-pointed needles for working small circumference projects in the round.

Materials

The Ossett Socks are designed to be knitted with Rowan Sock yarn, a 3-ply weight yarn. One 100-gram ball of Rowan Sock is required (photographed in the colorway Evergreen 003). Needles required include either a set of five double-pointed needles size 2½ or one circular needle size 2½ measuring 80 cm in length for working the Magic Loop technique. The smaller needle size and fine yarn weight create the tight gauge necessary for durable, well-fitting socks.
