Product Description
If you are looking for a very special present for somebody who is in love with the ocean, maybe Arrluk the Orca is the whale to knit! Arrluk, which actually means “killer whale” in the language of the Inuit, is pretty easy to knit, but be aware that you should be practised in mattress stitch – there is a long seam all around the body that should be carried out as clean as possible.
Krill Napoleon is NOT part of the pattern, but you find him in my shop.
Orca Arrluk Killer Whale Knitted Toy
What is Being Made
The Orca Arrluk is a knitted stuffed toy designed by Steffi Hochfellner, featuring a killer whale character. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a three-dimensional plush toy of an orca, also known as a killer whale. According to the pattern description, the orca is characterized as "the unchallenged king of the ice cold seas in the far north and south" and is portrayed as a mighty hunter that transforms into "a really nice guy" when adopted as a handmade toy. The finished toy is suitable for display, play, or as a decorative craft project.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This knitting pattern employs fundamental toy-making techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level knitter. The construction involves knitting individual pieces that are subsequently assembled together to form the three-dimensional orca shape. The pattern utilizes standard knitting methodology for creating stuffed animals, which typically includes knitting flat or tubular sections that are then joined and filled with fiberfill or similar stuffing materials to achieve the toy's dimensional form.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern documentation, the exact stitch names and techniques are detailed within the full pattern pages. The pattern includes a dedicated technique section that explains the stitches required for successful completion of this intermediate-level project.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Orca Arrluk pattern is designed to work with 4-ply, DK (double knitting), or sport weight yarn. These yarn weights are ideal for creating detailed, finely-worked toy features with good stitch definition. The pattern requires appropriate knitting needles sized to match the selected yarn weight. Additional materials needed include stuffing material for filling the completed toy pieces, as is standard for knitted toy construction. The pattern documentation includes a gauge section and a materials list specifying what is needed before beginning the project.
Pattern Format and Designer Information
This is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Steffi Hochfellner (also credited as Steffi Dobbertin), available through the cats-and-hats brand. The PDF includes both English and German language versions of the complete knitting instructions, allowing crafters to work in their preferred language. The pattern is presented in a comprehensive document format that includes all necessary instructions, gauge information, and technique guidance for intermediate knitters.
