What Is Being Made

Old Flame is a knitted cowl designed by Threebagsfulled (Hilary Designs). This finished accessory measures 8 inches by 20 inches and is crafted to create a beautiful, eye-catching neckwear piece. The cowl is worked in the round using DK weight yarn, resulting in a lightweight yet elegant garment suitable for layering over everyday outfits.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for 150 yards of DK weight yarn. The sample shown was worked in Malabrigo Silky, a luxurious yarn choice that enhances the drape and visual appeal of the finished cowl. Additional materials include size 6 knitting needles, a marker for tracking rounds, and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Knitting Techniques

Old Flame employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with basic to intermediate skill levels. The pattern uses the following key techniques:

• Slip stitch decreases: The pattern features the sl1–K2tog–psso technique, which involves slipping one stitch purlwise with yarn in back, knitting the following two stitches together, then passing the slipped stitch over the knit two together decrease and off the needle. This creates a centered, elegant decrease.
• Yarn overs: These create decorative openwork and lace elements throughout the cowl.
• Circular knitting: The cowl is worked in the round, joined by knitting the first cast-on stitch together with the last cast-on stitch to create a seamless construction.
