Product Description

Okapi: (An animal - known as the forest giraffe or zebra giraffe with striped hindquarters and front legs. Native to the Ituri Rainforest, located in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa)

This is a top down and seamless sweater constructed with saddle shoulders using contiguous shaping. (The contiguous method was developed by SusieM)

The pattern is written for lace weight yarn held double, combined to give 4 tweedy and tonal shades.

However, you may chose to knit the sweater with a single strand of fingering weight yarn.

Whatever yarn weight you chose, your colour options are endless. All you need is enough yarn in one shade to knit the body and sleeve tops: then you can go wild with various colour combinations for the stripy sleeves!

Okapi Sweater by Judith Brien Knits / Woolanme

What is Being Made

The Okapi is a top-down, seamless knitted sweater designed by Judith Brien Knits / Woolanme. Inspired by the okapi—a forest animal native to the Ituri Rainforest in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also known as the forest giraffe or zebra giraffe due to its distinctive striped hindquarters and front legs—this intermediate-level knitting pattern creates a sophisticated garment suitable for knitters with some experience.

Construction and Techniques

The Okapi sweater features a top-down construction method, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless finished garment. The pattern employs saddle shoulders, a classic shaping technique that creates a custom fit across the shoulder area. The sweater is constructed using the contiguous shaping method, a technique developed by Susie M that allows for smooth, integrated shaping throughout the garment without interruption to the knitting process.

Yarn and Material Options

The Okapi pattern is written for lace weight yarn held double, combining four tweedy and tonal shades to create depth and visual interest in the finished sweater. This doubling technique transforms the delicate lace weight into a more substantial fabric suitable for wearable garments. Alternatively, knitters may choose to work the pattern using a single strand of fingering weight yarn, offering flexibility based on yarn availability and personal preference. Regardless of yarn weight selection, knitters have endless color options to customize their finished sweater.

Stitches and Techniques

While the pattern utilizes lace weight or fingering weight yarn, the specific stitch patterns and techniques are detailed within the downloadable PDF. The seamless, top-down construction and contiguous shaping method require intermediate knitting skills, including proficiency with increases, decreases, and the ability to work from charts or written instructions for shaping.
