Product Description
*** Updated to include instructions for long sleeves ***
This crochet pattern is for a men's polo shirt with a buttoned-up neck and collar. A classic stripe pattern is vertical round the torso and turned 90 degrees across the chest. Short sleeves and hem echo the stripe design in their finish.
The torse is made sideways, to make easy vertical stripes, and the chest is worked from top of the torso upwards. The shirt is made in four pieces and sewn together. The pattern was designed using an DK weight cotton, with accents in a DK cotton/polyamide blend.
The instructions include lots of detail to ensure complex shaping is made easy. There is a lot of stretch in the finished item, so the sizing is only approximate. I have listed this pattern as "Intermediate" because of shaping and pattern techniques.
Offset Stripe Polo Shirt by SeyhallCrochetDesign
What is Being Made
The Offset Stripe Polo Shirt is a crocheted garment designed as a wearable top featuring a classic polo-style construction. This intermediate-level project creates a fitted shirt with a collar and button placket, available in five sizes ranging from Small (88 cm / 34.5 inches chest) to XX-Large (120 cm / 47 inches chest). The design incorporates offset stripes as a visual element, creating visual interest through strategic color placement and patterning.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This crochet project employs fundamental garment construction techniques suitable for intermediate crocheters. The pattern uses stitch counts to achieve precise sizing, making tension matching essential for successful completion. The designer recommends adjusting hook size if necessary to achieve the specified stitch count rather than relying solely on the recommended 4.5 mm crochet hook size. The garment is constructed using alternating rows of different stitches to create texture and structure, with the offset stripe pattern integrated throughout the construction process.
Stitches Used
- Double Crochet (dc) - The primary stitch used throughout the garment for building fabric structure and drape
- Single Crochet (sc) - Alternated with double crochet rows to create texture and definition in the offset stripe pattern
- Chain (ch) - Used for foundation and stitch construction
- Sc2tog (Single Crochet Two Together) - A decrease stitch for shaping the garment
- Dc2tog (Double Crochet Two Together) - A decrease stitch for shaping and fitting
- Begdc2tog (Beginning Double Crochet Two Together) - A specialized decrease stitch used at the beginning of rows
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Offset Stripe Polo Shirt is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent drape and stitch definition for garment construction. The pattern specifies King Cole Cottonsoft DK Cotton in two colorways: Ecru (711) and Black (746), with quantities varying by size from 3 to 5 skeins of Ecru and 4 to 6 skeins of Black depending on the finished size. Additionally, Paintbox Yarns Metallic DK in Sidecar (01) is incorporated for the offset stripe detailing, requiring 3 to 4 skeins of 50g (131 yards / 120 meters) depending on size.
The yarn composition of King Cole Cottonsoft provides a breathable, natural fiber option ideal for a wearable polo shirt. The metallic yarn adds a subtle shimmer and visual contrast to the offset stripe design. The combination of cotton and metallic yarns creates both functional and aesthetic benefits for this garment.
Equipment and Finishing Details
Construction requires a 4.5 mm crochet hook as the primary tool, though hook size adjustment may be necessary to achieve the correct tension. Additional equipment includes stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a large eye needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming garment pieces together. The finished polo shirt is completed with three 25 mm buttons for the button placket, providing both functional closure and authentic polo-style detailing.
Tension and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 18 double crochet stitches by 6 pairs of alternating double crochet and single crochet rows equal 10 cm by 10 cm (4 inches by 4 inches). Achieving this tension is critical for proper garment fit and sizing, as the pattern relies on stitch counts rather than measurements alone. Crocheters are encouraged to adjust their hook size to match this tension specification if their initial gauge does not align with the pattern requirements.
