What is Being Made

Off the Chain is a knitted cowl designed as a large-scale winter accessory. This project creates a finished cowl measuring approximately 12 inches wide by 40 inches in circumference, making it an ideal neckwear piece that combines functionality with visual interest. The cowl is worked in the round using a straightforward construction method that joins the cast-on and bind-off edges together after completion.

Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly design employs several fundamental knitting techniques executed in a repeating four-row pattern. The construction uses yarn overs to create decorative openings and texture, decreases (knit two together and slip-knit-psso) to shape the fabric, and blocking to achieve the finished dimensions. The pattern is worked flat and then seamed, making it accessible for knitters new to circular construction. The open chain rib pattern creates a visually striking texture that showcases the yarn's bulk and drape.

Stitches Used

Pattern Overview
