Octopus Amigurumi Crochet Toy by Leanna's Designs
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern from Leanna's Designs creates a soft, cuddly octopus toy designed specifically for preemie babies. Originally designed in 2011 and revised in 2020, this beginner-friendly project uses basic crochet techniques to construct a rounded head and body suitable for young children. The finished toy is small enough for delicate hands and safe for infants when constructed with appropriate eye options.
What Is Being Made
The Octopus is a three-dimensional amigurumi-style crochet toy. Amigurumi is the Japanese craft of crocheting small, stuffed animals and toys. This particular design features a spherical head and body that tapers as it's worked, creating a classic octopus silhouette. The pattern includes safety features such as options for embroidered or crocheted eyes, making it suitable for vulnerable age groups. The toy is intended to be stuffed with fiberfill to create a soft, squishy texture.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-level pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible to new crafters. The construction begins with a magic loop (also called magic ring), a foundational technique for starting amigurumi projects in the round. Throughout the pattern, increases are worked by placing multiple stitches into single stitches, which creates the expanding rounds that form the head's rounded shape. Decreases are used in later rows to taper the body, creating shaping that defines the octopus form. The pattern uses stitch markers to track the beginning of each round, essential for maintaining consistent shaping in circular crochet work.
Stitches Used
- Double Crochet (dc) – The primary stitch throughout the entire pattern. In UK terminology (as specified in this pattern), double crochet is equivalent to single crochet in US terminology. This stitch creates a tight, dense fabric ideal for stuffed toys.
- Double Crochet Decrease (dc dec) – Used to reduce stitch count and shape the toy. This decrease is worked by pulling a loop through two consecutive stitches, then pulling the working yarn through all loops on the hook, effectively combining two stitches into one.
Materials Required
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as 8-ply), with approximately 25 grams (roughly one ball) needed to complete the project. DK weight provides a medium thickness that works well for small toys, creating a fabric with good stitch definition. Two crochet hooks are specified: a 5mm hook (US 8) for the main body and a 4mm hook for finer details or finishing work. Additional materials include polyester fiberfill stuffing to fill the completed toy, creating its three-dimensional shape and softness. For eyes, the pattern recommends 9-10mm safety eyes (appropriate for toys intended for children), with alternatives provided: embroidered eyes or crocheted eyes for added safety with very young infants.
Pattern Notes
The pattern explicitly uses UK crochet terminology throughout. Crafters familiar with US terminology should note that UK double crochet (dc) corresponds to US single crochet (sc). The pattern includes 13 rows of instructions, with rows 5 through 10 consisting of consistent single stitches to build height before the shaping decreases begin in rows 11 through 13. Stitch counts are provided at key points to help crafters verify their progress and catch any mistakes early.
