Ocean Time Mandala Rug by LillaBjörnCrochet
Project Overview
The Ocean Time Mandala Rug is an original crochet design by LillaBjörnCrochet (designer Tatsiana Kupryianchyk). This downloadable PDF pattern creates a beautiful mandala-inspired rug suitable for intermediate crochet enthusiasts. The finished piece showcases a striking circular mandala design that brings oceanic and natural tones into any space.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a decorative mandala rug with a circular, symmetrical design. The rug features a multi-colored composition that combines oceanic and earthy color palettes, making it an elegant home décor accent piece. The mandala structure creates visual interest through concentric circular patterns typical of traditional mandala designs adapted for crochet work.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Ocean Time Mandala Rug employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern utilizes standard crochet construction methods to build the circular mandala shape from the center outward, a common approach for creating symmetrical circular designs. Color changes throughout the pattern create the distinct mandala sections and visual depth.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create foundation chains and spacing throughout the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) – Provides structure and density to the fabric
- Slip stitch (ss) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between pattern sections
Materials Required
The Ocean Time Mandala Rug pattern calls for Scheepjes Mighty yarn, a practical blend of 32% jute and 68% cotton. This fiber composition creates a durable, textured fabric ideal for a rug application. The pattern requires a total of 15 balls of yarn distributed across four coordinating colors:
- Yarn A (757 Ocean) – 5 balls, providing the primary oceanic tone
- Yarn B (760 Dessert) – 4 balls, contributing warm neutral tones
- Yarn C (751 Stone) – 2 balls, adding subtle gray accents
- Yarn D (755 Mountain) – 4 balls, completing the color palette with deeper tones
Each ball contains 50 grams (1.76 ounces) and approximately 80 meters (87 yards) of yarn. A 4mm (size G) crochet hook is required to work with the specified yarn weight and achieve the proper gauge for this intermediate project.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, the Ocean Time Mandala Rug is suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and color-changing techniques. The circular mandala construction and multi-color work provide an engaging challenge without requiring advanced techniques.
