Product Description
I was recently asked if knitting cowls ever gets boring (as it seems that I have produced quite a few cowl patterns). My reply: it’s never boring! A cowl is a relatively small canvas that allows for experimenting with stitch patterns and a variety of colorways – so how could it ever be boring? This design was a challenge to myself: dip into the Shetland wool drawer and come up with a pleasing and somewhat subtle selection of colors that would suit the stitch patterns I had chosen.
Not Another Cowl! by Michael Harrigan
Project Overview
Not Another Cowl! is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Michael Harrigan, a Certified Master Knitter, Knitting Technical Editor, and Knitting Judge. This downloadable PDF pattern demonstrates that cowl knitting remains endlessly creative through experimentation with varied stitch patterns and colorway selections. The designer created this pattern as a personal challenge to combine Shetland wool in a carefully curated, subtle color palette with thoughtfully chosen stitch techniques.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a cowl – a versatile neckwear accessory that serves as a relatively small but impactful knitting canvas. Cowls offer knitters the opportunity to showcase stitch work and color combinations without committing to a large-scale garment project. The finished cowl is designed to be worn around the neck, providing both warmth and visual interest through its stitch pattern and multi-color construction.
Techniques and Stitch Work
The Not Another Cowl! pattern incorporates multiple stitch patterns that work together to create visual depth and texture. The design demonstrates intermediate-level knitting techniques, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical repertoire. The pattern utilizes color work techniques, combining multiple yarn colors (referred to as Color A, Color C, Color D, Color G, and Color H in the pattern) to create a cohesive and visually pleasing design. This multi-color approach requires attention to color placement and yarn management throughout the knitting process.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Jamieson's SHETLAND SPINDRIFT, a premium yarn made from 100% pure Shetland wool. Each ball contains 25 grams and yields approximately 105 meters (114.9 yards), making this a 4-ply weight yarn – a medium-weight option ideal for creating fabric with good drape and definition of stitch patterns. The designer selected five distinct Shetland wool colors for this project:
- Color A: #153 Wild Violet
- Color C: #320 Steel
- Color D: #629 Lupin
- Color G: #140 Rye
- Color H: #567 Damask
The pattern requires one ball each of the selected colors, allowing knitters to work with a manageable quantity of yarn while exploring sophisticated color combinations. Shetland wool is prized for its softness, elasticity, and subtle color variations, making it an excellent choice for cowl patterns where stitch definition and color nuance are important design elements.
Pattern Format and Designer Credentials
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing for convenient access and printing. The pattern is copyrighted by Michael Harrigan and is intended for personal use only. The designer's extensive credentials in knitting – including Certified Master Knitter status, technical editing experience, and knitting judging expertise – ensure that the pattern is technically sound and professionally developed.
