Noni Mock Cable and Lace Shawl by Linda Lehman
What is Being Made
The Noni Mock Cable and Lace Shawl is a rectangular wrap-style shawl measuring approximately 24 inches by 72 inches. This wearable art piece combines two distinct Japanese knitting stitches into a single cohesive design that creates visual complexity while remaining accessible to intermediate-level knitters with lace experience.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This shawl design incorporates Japanese knitting stitches that blend mock cable and lace techniques. The pattern features lace knitting as a primary technique, which creates openwork sections throughout the shawl. The mock cable elements add textural interest and dimension without requiring the traditional cable needle manipulation of standard cable stitches. Key abbreviations used in the pattern include K (Knit), P (Purl), and YO (Yarn Over), with yarn overs being essential to the lace construction. Although the combination of these Japanese stitches may appear intricate, the pattern is designed to be learnable for knitters already comfortable with lace knitting fundamentals.
Materials and Specifications
For the main shawl body:
- 1000 to 1200 yards of fingering weight yarn
- U.S. Size #6 (4mm) knitting needles
- One spare size #6 needle
- Tapestry needle for finishing
- Row counter (optional but recommended)
For the edging:
- Approximately 100 yards of the same or coordinating yarn
- Size H and I crochet hooks
The shawl is worked to a gauge of approximately 5 stitches per inch in the pattern stitch when aggressively blocked for lace. The designer notes that gauge is not critical for this particular garment, making it forgiving for knitters who may not achieve exact gauge specifications.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as Intermediate, with the assumption that knitters already possess foundational knowledge of lace knitting techniques. The Japanese stitches used may be new to American knitters, but the pattern is designed to be accessible and easily learned by those with lace knitting experience.
