No Frills Pullover by Mrs Moon
What is Being Made
The No Frills Pullover is a simple, stylish sweater designed by Mrs Moon for knitters of intermediate skill level. This practical garment features clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic, making it a versatile wardrobe staple. The sweater is available in four sizes ranging from Small to Extra Large, with finished chest measurements from 97cm (38") to 120cm (47¼") and lengths from 47cm (18¾") to 55cm (21¾"). The design includes the option to customize sleeve length according to individual preference, with extended sleeve instructions provided for those who wish to add length beyond the standard pattern.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pullover is knitted in the round from the top down, a construction method that allows for seamless shaping and fitting adjustments as you work. The pattern employs strategic increases to shape the body and sleeves, using M1R (make one right) and M1L (make one left) techniques to create invisible, evenly distributed increases. The top-down construction method enables you to try on the garment as you progress and adjust the length to your exact preferences before binding off. The pattern uses magic loop or double-pointed needles for working the sleeves in the round, offering flexibility in needle choice based on knitter preference.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout the No Frills Pullover is stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic V-pattern fabric characteristic of this sweater. Stocking stitch is achieved by knitting all stitches on right-side rounds and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows when working flat, or simply knitting every round when working in the round as this pattern does. The pattern begins with a cast-on and uses marker placement to track pattern repeats and shaping sections, with increases worked symmetrically around the body to maintain balanced proportions.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Mrs Moon Plump DK weight yarn in quantities of 6 skeins (Size S), 7 skeins (Size M), 8 skeins (Size L), or 10 skeins (Size XL). The pattern features the colorway Gooseberry Fool in the sample shown, though any DK weight yarn of appropriate yardage would be suitable.
- Needles: 4.5mm and 4mm circular needles measuring 80cm in length, plus double-pointed needles (dpns) for sleeve shaping if not using the magic loop method. The 4.5mm needles are used for the main body fabric, while the 4mm needles are used for ribbed edgings or cuff sections to create a neat, fitted finish.
- Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows measured over 10cm of stocking stitch on 4.5mm needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit and finished measurements.
Difficulty Level
Rated as suitable for advanced beginners to intermediate knitters, the No Frills Pullover requires competency with fundamental knitting techniques including casting on, knitting in the round, reading pattern instructions, and working increases. The top-down construction and in-the-round method are intermediate-level skills that offer the advantage of being able to adjust fit and length as you work, making this pattern forgiving for those still developing their skills.
