Product Description
Newsboy Hat/Beret will look great in the spring or fall! This pattern contains detailed written instructions along with pictures to guide you through each move.
I advise using two sized of a hook - a 3.75mm for the brim and bill (to make a tighter knit) and a 4 - 4.5mm hook for the main body of the hat. If you comfortable controlling the size of your stitches, then you can use one size. I use a smaller size of the hook than the yarn manufacturers suggest, I just find that the results are better (unless a loose knit is desired).
Yarn - tweed or marled colors look best for this beret (dark brown in my picture); however, solid colors are also cute). Main color:
o Lion Brand Heartland, Worsted (Black Canyon Tweed 353 or Sequoia 126), or
o (#4) Medium Weight, Acrylic, Red Heart Super Saver Ombré. One skein is 5 oz, 232 yards (212m). You will need about a skain and a half
Second color of your choice (need about 50m)

Newsboy Beret Hat by Lana's Crafts
What is Being Made
The Newsboy Hat/Beret is a structured crochet hat designed to flatter multiple head sizes and face shapes. This pattern creates a classic newsboy-style beret featuring a rounded crown with depth and a defined brim, making it an ideal accessory for spring and fall seasons. The finished hat measures 9 inches deep and accommodates a range of adult sizes from teen to large.
Sizing Options
- Teen: 18.5–20" circumference
- Small Adult: 19–20" circumference
- Medium Adult: 20–21" circumference
- Large Adult: 21–22" circumference
The pattern instructions provided are specifically sized for a regular adult head measuring 21–22" circumference.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental crochet stitches and shaping techniques to construct a fitted, dimensional hat. The pattern employs strategic increases and decreases to create the rounded crown shape characteristic of a beret, while the brim is worked separately to achieve clean, finished edges. The structured construction ensures the hat maintains its shape and sits properly on the head.
Materials and Supplies
Crochet Hooks (Two Sizes):
- Size G (4mm) hook for the body of the beret
- Size F/5 (3.75mm) hook for the brim and flower detail
Yarn:
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn (#4) in marled or print colorways, which are recommended for the best visual appearance. Solid colors are also suitable alternatives. Specific yarn suggestions include Lion Brand Heartland Worsted in colorways such as Sequoia 126 or Black Canyon Tweed 353. The marled texture adds depth and visual interest to the finished hat.
Pattern Features
This downloadable PDF pattern includes detailed written instructions accompanied by step-by-step photographs to guide crafters through each stage of construction. The visual aids make it accessible for intermediate-level crocheters who are comfortable with basic stitches and shaping techniques. The pattern also incorporates a decorative flower element on the brim, adding a charming finishing touch to the newsboy beret design.
