Product Description
This is a great project for creating lovely baby gifts using your leftover yarn. All hats are knitted with one size of straight needles, yarn of the same weight and basic stitches.
Size: Height - 15cm (6in), Width - 16cm (6.5in). The rib can stretch up to about 38cm (15in) in circumference.
I have used oddments of yarn from my stash and some colors are discontinued. I provide the yarns I used in the pattern, and include some other options, but many DK yarns of your choice can be used as well.
Other materials: Pom pom maker size 3.5cm (1.5in) / Small amount of acrylic or wool yarn in white/cream for the pom pom / Stitch markers (optional) / Smaller size of needles for the rib (optional)
Newborn Baby Hats by BelaFarCrafts
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting PDF pattern collection from independent designer BelaFarCrafts features three distinct newborn baby hat designs. Each hat is crafted using DK weight yarn and 4.00mm (US 6) needles, making them suitable for intermediate knitters. The patterns are specifically designed for delicate newborn sizing with soft, breathable yarn options.
Lacy Beanie
The Lacy Beanie is knitted using Wendy Merino DK in Shade #2383, a 100% Super Soft Merino Wool yarn. One 50g ball provides approximately 116 meters (127 yards) of yarn. This design features lace stitch work that creates an airy, delicate fabric ideal for newborn comfort. The gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rows over a 10 centimeter (4 inch) square.
Slouchy Hat
The Slouchy Hat is constructed from Stylecraft Naturals DK in Shade #7125, a blend of 60% Bamboo and 40% Cotton. This yarn comes in a 100g ball with approximately 250 meters (273 yards) of yardage. The bamboo-cotton blend provides breathability and softness for sensitive newborn skin. The relaxed slouchy silhouette is achieved through the stitch pattern and shaping. Gauge for this design is 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches).
Diagonal Squares Beanie
The Diagonal Squares Beanie features geometric stitch work using Rowan Baby Merino Silk DK, a luxurious blend of 66% Merino Wool and 34% Silk. The original shade for this hat has been discontinued, but the pattern remains available. One 50g ball yields approximately 135 meters (148 yards). The diagonal squares pattern creates visual interest while maintaining the softness required for newborn wear. The gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches).
Yarn and Needle Specifications
All three hat designs are worked on 4.00mm (US 6) needles with DK weight yarn. The consistent needle size across designs makes it easy to switch between patterns using the same needles.
Alternative Yarn Options
The pattern provides several alternative yarn substitutions for knitters who prefer different fiber content or have specific yarn preferences:
- Stylecraft Special DK: 100% Premium Acrylic, 100g ball, approximately 295 meters (322 yards), gauge 22 stitches and 30 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches)
- Patons Diploma Gold DK: 55% Wool, 25% Acrylic, 20% Nylon blend, 50g ball, 120 meters (131 yards), gauge 22 stitches and 30 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches)
- Rowan Pure Wool Superwash DK: 100% wool with superwash treatment for easy care, 50g ball, approximately 125 meters (137 yards), gauge 22 stitches and 30 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches)
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
These intermediate-level patterns incorporate various knitting techniques suited to newborn hat construction. The Lacy Beanie uses lace stitch techniques that create openwork patterns through yarn overs and decreases, producing a lightweight, breathable fabric. The Slouchy Hat employs shaping techniques to achieve its relaxed fit, likely using increases and decreases to create the characteristic slouch. The Diagonal Squares Beanie features geometric stitch patterns that create diagonal lines and square motifs, demonstrating intermediate-level stitch manipulation.
Materials Summary
All designs use DK weight yarn, which is ideal for newborn garments due to its fine gauge and resulting fabric drape. The primary yarn choices emphasize natural fibers—Merino Wool, Bamboo, Cotton, and Silk blends—chosen for their softness, breathability, and gentle properties suitable for delicate newborn skin. Acrylic alternatives are provided for knitters seeking budget-friendly or easy-care options. The superwash treatment available in some alternatives addresses practical laundry concerns for baby garments.
