Product Description
An entrelac sock with an unusual construction, Nessa begins with a standard cuff-down construction, but then becomes something completely different once the heel flap is complete.
This sock is exclusively available to the Sock Club until Sept. 2014.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. The entrelac makes the pattern a bit tricky, and the unusual construction adds a bit to the confusion. It's not difficult knitting, but an understanding of sock construction helps and a careful reading of the pattern will be necessary.
Yarn: The yarn requirements for this sock are higher than usual. I strongly recommend getting more yardage than you anticipate for this sock. A self-striping would take best advantage of the entrelac stitch.

Nessa Socks by Claire Ellen
What is Being Made
Nessa Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by independent designer Claire Ellen. This pattern creates a unique sock construction inspired by the character Nessa from J.R.R. Tolkien's mythology—a figure known for grace, speed, and dancing. The socks are designed with dancing in mind, featuring a modern construction approach that flows from foot to toe before joining back at the heel, rather than following traditional sock construction methods.
Techniques and Construction
The Nessa Socks pattern employs an entrelac technique as its primary design feature. Entrelac is an advanced knitting method that creates a woven, interlocking appearance through a series of short rows and strategic stitch manipulation. The stitches in this pattern "dance in measured steps" in a typical entrelac pattern, creating a visually dynamic fabric. The sock itself features an unusual free-flowing construction that is unconventional compared to standard sock patterns. Rather than the typical top-down or toe-up approach, this design flows down the foot and over the toes before finally joining back at the heel, making it a ballet-like construction process.
The pattern includes very detailed instructions that require careful pattern reading, as the construction method is non-standard. This makes the pattern suitable for knitters with intermediate to advanced skill levels who are comfortable following complex directions and working with advanced techniques.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch technique employed throughout the Nessa Socks is the entrelac stitch pattern, which creates the characteristic woven, interlocking visual effect. This stitch pattern is worked in measured steps to create the dancing appearance of the design. The entrelac technique is yarn-intensive, which affects both the overall yardage requirements and the fit of the finished socks.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Nessa Socks pattern calls for 400-500 yards (370-460 meters) of sock yarn. The pictured sample in a size large used 486 yards. The designer recommends working this pattern in multi-colored self-striping yarn, which is said to showcase the design at its best. Self-striping yarns automatically create color variations as you knit, complementing the entrelac pattern's visual complexity.
Because the entrelac pattern is yarn-intensive and consumes more yardage than typical sock patterns, the sizing is roomier than usual. Knitters should take this into consideration when selecting their size, as the finished socks will have a more relaxed fit compared to standard sock patterns.
Pattern Difficulty
This pattern is rated as intermediate to advanced difficulty. While the detailed instructions support knitters through the unusual construction method, success requires careful attention to pattern reading and comfort with advanced techniques like entrelac. This is not a beginner sock pattern, but rather a project suited for experienced knitters seeking a creative challenge.
