The Naomi Poncho

Design Overview

The Naomi Poncho is constructed in separate front and back pieces that are seamed at the sides. The back is worked in Stockinette stitch, while the front features a prominent cable panel worked over the centre stitches, adding visual interest and texture to the finished garment. A tall, cosy ribbed collar is picked up and worked in the round after the body pieces are joined, completing the poncho's distinctive silhouette.

Techniques Used

  • Flat knitting – both the back and front are worked flat, row by row, before being seamed
  • Side seaming – the finished back and front pieces are sewn together along the side edges
  • Armhole and neckline shaping – graduated bind-offs at both side edges and the neckline create the poncho's shaped silhouette
  • Picking up stitches – stitches are picked up along the neck edge using double-pointed needles to begin the collar
  • Working in the round – the collar is knitted in the round on double-pointed needles
  • Cable knitting – a cable pattern is worked over the centre 14 stitches of the front, following a provided chart

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – used for the back panel and as the main fabric of the front outside the cable section
  • Rib pattern (K2, P1) – worked at the lower edges of both back and front pieces as a neat, stretchy border
  • Cable pattern – a charted cable worked over the centre stitches of the front for decorative texture
  • 2x2 Ribbing (K2, P2) – used for the tall collar, transitioned from the initial K2, P1 rib after a deliberate increase row that converts each P1 into P2

Construction Details

The back begins with a rib border, then transitions into Stockinette stitch. Shaping begins at both side edges when the work reaches 20 cm, with a series of bind-offs worked every two rows. Neckline shaping begins at 40 cm, where the centre 14 stitches are bound off and each shoulder half is worked separately, with further bind-offs at the neck edge every two rows.

The front mirrors the back's rib border and side-edge increases, but introduces a cable panel over the centre 14 stitches once the rib is complete. To accommodate the cable's structure, 8 stitches are evenly increased across those 14 stitches at the start of the cable section, bringing the cable panel to 22 stitches. Side-edge decreases match those of the back. Before the neckline shaping begins, the 8 extra cable stitches are decreased away on the final wrong-side row, returning the stitch count to match the back for a clean join.

Once both pieces are seamed, 75 stitches are picked up around the neck edge. The collar begins in K2, P1 rib and after 5 cm, a deliberate increase row works two purl stitches into each single purl stitch, converting the fabric to K2, P2 rib. The collar continues in 2x2 rib until it reaches 30 cm in total length, creating a deep, snug cowl-style neckline. It is bound off using a larger needle size to ensure the edge remains stret
