Product Description

Jane used a repeating tessellating design in this shawl, known as an 'Ogee' pattern in Arabesque design. It took her a few weeks to get the design of the blocks right; initially she came up with loads of really complicated ways to create the motif but in the end it was so simple!

The stitches used in this design are ch, ss, dc, tr and dtr.

Also available as a scarf or blanket.

Mystical Lanterns Crochet Shawl by Jane Crowfoot

Project Overview

The Mystical Lanterns Shawl is a beginner-friendly crochet design featuring a tessellating Ogee pattern inspired by Arabesque design principles. This downloadable PDF pattern combines traditional granny hexagon construction with innovative curved motifs that interlock seamlessly, creating an intricate visual effect that belies its surprisingly simple construction method.

Design Inspiration and Pattern Development

Designer Jane Crowfoot spent several weeks refining the lantern-shaped motif used throughout this shawl. The design process initially explored complex construction techniques before arriving at an elegantly simple solution. The repeating pattern is based on the traditional Granny Hexagon, a classic crochet motif, but has been adapted with curved elements that allow the blocks to tessellate—meaning they fit together perfectly without gaps, creating a cohesive, flowing fabric.

Ogee Pattern and Arabesque Design

The tessellating design structure is known as an Ogee pattern within Arabesque design traditions. This geometric approach creates a sophisticated visual rhythm across the shawl, with the repeated lantern shapes forming an intricate overall pattern that appears more complex than the individual construction steps suggest.

Construction Technique and Method

This shawl incorporates a unique construction approach credited to Dani, a technique that enables crafters to create a beautiful, personalized accessory through an innovative and enjoyable process. The method is described as wonderfully simple yet incredibly effective, making it accessible to beginners while remaining engaging for experienced crocheters.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques

  • Granny Hexagon base structure adapted with curved modifications
  • Tessellating block construction for seamless pattern integration
  • Motif-based assembly method suitable for beginner skill levels

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight option that creates a delicate, drape-friendly fabric ideal for shawl construction. The 4-ply weight allows the tessellating motifs to maintain definition while remaining soft and wearable. Crocheters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for 4-ply yarn, as specified in the complete pattern instructions within the PDF.

Skill Level and Accessibility

Rated as a beginner difficulty project, the Mystical Lanterns Shawl is accessible to newer crocheters despite its sophisticated appearance. The straightforward nature of the individual motifs combined with the innovative construction technique makes this an excellent project for building skills while creating a visually impressive finished piece.
