Mystic Waters Knitted Lace Shawl by Anna Dalvi

Project Overview

Mystic Waters is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design inspired by the contemplative beauty of water in its many forms—from deep oceans to summer rain. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Anna Dalvi offers knitters the opportunity to create a stunning lace shawl available in two finished sizes, allowing customization based on preference and yarn availability.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a large triangular or crescent-shaped lace shawl with two size options. The large size measures 250 cm (98 inches) in width and 128 cm (50 inches) in height when blocked, while the small size measures 180 cm (71 inches) in width and 97 cm (38 inches) in height when blocked. The finished shawl is a lightweight, elegant garment suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The shawl is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques combined with charted lace patterns. The pattern begins with a minimal cast-on of just 2 stitches using the long-tail cast-on method, which is then increased in the setup rows. The design employs a strategic approach to shaping, with only right-side rows charted for the knitter's reference. This charting method simplifies pattern reading by requiring knitters to work wrong-side rows in a consistent manner: knit 2 stitches, purl to the last 2 stitches, then knit 2 stitches. This creates clean edge stitches and maintains the shawl's structure throughout the knitting process.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used in the blocked gauge measurement is stockinette stitch, which serves as the foundation for understanding the pattern's tension and finished dimensions. The shawl incorporates lace stitches as indicated by the charted right-side rows, creating openwork patterns that evoke the fluid, ethereal quality of water. Additional techniques include kfb (knit front and back) increases used in the setup rows to expand the initial 2 cast-on stitches to 4 stitches, establishing the base for the expanding triangular or crescent shawl shape. The combination of charted lace sections with stockinette creates visual interest and allows for the dramatic size expansion characteristic of top-down shawl construction.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Fårö yarn from Klippan, which is composed of 100% merino fiber. Each skein provides 600 yards (549 meters) per 100 grams, offering sufficient yardage for the larger shawl size. The pattern notes that similar lace-weight yarns may be substituted, providing flexibility for knitters who wish to use alternative merino blends or other high-quality lace-weight fibers. The specified needle size is 3.75 mm (US 5), appropriate for lace-weight yarn and the desired fabric density. A large-eyed, blunt needle is recommended for weaving in ends and finishing the completed shawl.

Gauge and Blocking

The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches and 30 rows equal 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, blocked. This gauge measurement is taken after blocking, which is essential for lace shawls as blocking opens up the lace stitches and sets the final dimensions. Knitters should swatch and block their gauge swatch to ensure accurate finished measurements, as lace shawls are highly dependent on proper blocking to achieve their intended appearance and size.

Difficulty Level

Classified as an intermediate-level pattern, Mystic Waters is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working from charts and managing increasing stitches. The intermediate rating reflects the combination of charted lace patterns, the need to understand and execute increases, and the importance of proper blocking technique to achieve the finished design.
