Product Description
This hat looks so different depending on the contrast color used!
The pattern involves a slipped twist stitch that may be a little different than typical twist stitches. To help you decipher the slipped twist stitch, view our video tutorial on our YouTube channel.
Size options - The sizes are 17”, 18 1/4”. and 19 1/2” circumference x 8 1/2” deep. You can make the hat deeper by adding 1-2 repeats of the first chart. (Yes, there are charts, but the pattern is also fully written out.)
Gauge is done in the round using the slip twist pattern - it’s a good time to practice the technique and get it down pat before moving onto the larger hat.
You will need fingering weight yarn - approximately 250-300 yards MC and 50-100 yards CC
Mystery Date Hat by 3 Kittens Needle Arts
Project Overview
The Mystery Date Hat is an advanced-level knitted hat designed by Laura Rasmussen and published by 3 Kittens Needle Arts. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a fitted, sophisticated hat with a finished circumference of 17 inches (18¼, 19½ inches in larger sizes) and a depth of 8½ inches. The hat is constructed using specialized knitting techniques that create visual interest through twisted stitches and elongated stitch work, making it an ideal project for experienced knitters seeking a challenging and rewarding design.
What Is Being Made
The Mystery Date Hat is a close-fitting knit cap designed to sit securely on the head. With three size options accommodating different head circumferences, this hat combines structural shaping with decorative stitch patterning. The design features a blend of standard knit and purl stitches combined with advanced techniques, creating a textured fabric that is both visually striking and dimensionally interesting.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques that distinguish it as an intermediate-to-advanced project:
- Slip Right Twist (SRT): A cable-like technique where the right needle inserts into the front of the second stitch on the left needle while going in front of the first stitch, then knits the first stitch before dropping both stitches from the left needle. This creates a twisted, crossed stitch effect without requiring a cable needle.
- Slip Left Twist (SLT): The reverse of the SRT technique, where the right needle inserts into the back of the second stitch on the left needle while going behind the first stitch, knits that stitch, then slips the first stitch and drops the second stitch. This creates a twisted effect in the opposite direction.
- Elongated Stitches: The pattern incorporates k1e (knit 1 elongated) stitches created by wrapping the yarn twice around the needle to produce longer, more pronounced stitches that add texture and visual dimension to the fabric.
- Slip Stitches: Strategic use of slipped stitches (always slipped as if to purl unless otherwise directed) helps create clean edges and contributes to the overall stitch pattern structure.
- Circular Knitting: The hat is constructed in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless, professional finish.
Stitches Used
The Mystery Date Hat utilizes a combination of fundamental and advanced stitches:
- Knit (k): The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric.
- Purl (p): Purl stitches are combined with knit stitches to create textural contrast and pattern definition.
- Slip Stitches (sl): Used throughout the pattern to create clean transitions and contribute to the stitch pattern design.
- Slip Right Twist (SRT) and Slip Left Twist (SLT): These signature twisted stitches create the distinctive visual pattern of the hat without requiring cable needles, making them more accessible than traditional cable techniques while achieving similar visual effects.
- Elongated Stitches (k1e): Created by wrapping the yarn twice around the needle before completing the stitch, these stitches add textural depth and visual interest to specific areas of the pattern.
Materials and Gauge
The Mystery Date Hat is designed to be worked with Polka Dot Sheep Tenderfoot 80/20 yarn, a premium blend of 80% Superwash Merino Wool and 20% Nylon. This fiber content provides durability, elasticity, and easy care. The pattern calls for one 100-gram skein (400 yards) in the main color (MC) and one 25-gram mini skein (100 yards) in a contrasting color (CC), allowing for creative color combinations and visual contrast in the twisted stitch pattern.
The project requires US 2/2.75mm needles (16-inch circular) for ribbing or initial stitches and US 3/3.0mm needles for the main pattern work, available in both 16-inch circular and double-pointed needle formats. The gauge is approximately 37 stitches and 60 rows per 4 inches when worked in the stitch pattern using US 3/3.0mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the
