My Inbetweeny Gargoyle by Phoenixknits

What Is Being Made

My Inbetweeny Gargoyle is a knitted shelf sitter doll designed by Phoenixknits. This gargoyle figure measures 13 inches high when displayed sitting on his included rock, or 10 inches high when positioned alone. The project creates a decorative soft sculpture suitable for display on shelves, desks, or as a unique handmade gift.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs several fundamental construction techniques to bring the gargoyle to life. Mattress stitch is the primary seaming method used throughout the project to join pieces together with an invisible, professional finish. For attaching limbs and other appendages, the pattern utilizes grafting method, which creates seamless joins by weaving live stitches together. The body is constructed using increase stitches to shape the form, building from a small cast-on and gradually expanding to create the gargoyle's dimensional silhouette.

Stitches Used

  • Cast on – Foundation stitches to begin the body piece
  • Knit (k) – Basic knit stitch for fabric creation
  • Purl (p) – Reverse stitch used in alternating rows
  • Increase 1 (inc1) – Stitch increases worked into every stitch or in patterned intervals (k1, inc1 repeats) to expand the fabric width and create shaping
  • Mattress stitch – Seaming technique for joining pieces invisibly
  • Grafting – Seamless joining method for attaching limbs

Materials Required

This project uses DK weight yarn (also called 8ply), which is a medium-weight yarn ideal for creating defined details in small garments and amigurumi-style projects. The gargoyle requires yarn in multiple colors: medium grey (100 grams for the main body), dark grey (25 grams for wings), and stone colour or light grey (30 grams, used double-stranded). Knitters have the option to use the same color as the main body for certain elements if preferred. The pattern calls for 3mm needles for knitting the body and 4mm needles for the wings section. Additional notions include one pair of 10mm flat top black buttons for eyes, which add character and definition to the finished gargoyle's face.
