Product Description
This beautiful cable set is perfect to keep your little one warm during winter time. Hat and scarf have matching cable pattern. The hat is knitted in the round. It has ear flaps for extra warm and comfort. The hat is decorated with big pompom and pearl beads. The scarf has a loop on one end so it can be used either as a baby scarf or as a female headband. I made this baby set in white color using DROPS merino extra fine superwash yarn but actual color and type of yarn can be varied.
The knitting pattern is easy to follow. Depending on yarn color either you can make a hat for both girl or boy. The PDF pattern contains five pages of cable chart, written instructions and pictures.
My First Winter Baby Hat and Scarf by ViTalina Craft
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer ViTalina Craft provides instructions for creating a coordinated winter set perfect for babies aged 6-9 months. The collection includes a fitted baby hat and a complementary scarf, both designed with intermediate-level knitters in mind. This pattern combines essential cold-weather accessories into one cohesive project, making it an ideal choice for gift-giving or personal use.
Hat Specifications
Finished Measurements: The hat is designed to fit head circumferences up to 44 cm (17 inches), making it appropriately sized for infants in the 6-9 month age range.
Scarf Specifications
Finished Measurements: The scarf measures 84 cm (33 inches) in length and 9 cm (3.5 inches) in width, providing a practical and proportionate accessory for a baby.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters:
- Selvedge Stitches: The pattern utilizes selvedge edge stitches worked on every row to create neat, finished edges on pieces knitted back and forth on straight needles. The technique involves slipping the first stitch purlwise and knitting the final stitch on each row.
- Basic Stitches: The pattern uses essential knitting stitches including knit stitches (K), purl stitches (P), knit two stitches together (K2tog) for decreasing, purl two stitches together (P2tog) for decreasing, and make one knit stitch (M1K) for increasing.
- Circular and Flat Construction: The pattern incorporates both circular needle work and double-pointed needle techniques, allowing knitters to practice multiple construction methods.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Yarn: The pattern calls for 3 x 50 g balls of DROPS Merino extra fine superwash yarn, or equivalent yarn that achieves the specified gauge. The DK weight yarn is ideal for creating soft, delicate pieces suitable for sensitive baby skin, with the superwash treatment providing easy care and durability.
Needles and Notions: The pattern requires a circular needle size 2.5 (3.0mm) measuring 40 cm in length, along with a set of double-pointed needles in the same size (2.5/3.0mm). Additionally, the design incorporates 19 x 3 mm pearl beads as decorative embellishments.
Gauge and Construction Notes
The pattern emphasizes the importance of obtaining gauge before beginning the project, a critical step for ensuring the finished pieces fit correctly. Knitters should take time to swatch and measure their gauge with the specified yarn and needle size to achieve the intended finished measurements.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with basic skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The combination of different needle types, edge treatments, and stitch techniques provides an engaging project for developing crafters.
