Mully Baby Sweater by Melissa Schaschwary
What is Being Made
Mully is a baby sweater designed by Melissa Schaschwary of Dandiliongirl Designs. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a raglan-style pullover sweater available in four infant sizes: 0-3 months, 6-9 months, 12 months, and 18 months. The design features elbow patches in a contrasting color, adding a charming decorative detail to this practical baby garment.
Techniques Used
The Mully sweater employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The garment is constructed using raglan neck shaping, a classic method for creating fitted armholes and sleeves that slope from the neckline to the underarm. The pattern utilizes top-down construction, beginning with a set-up row at the neck and working downward to complete the body and sleeves. Knitters will work in the round using circular needles and stitch markers to track pattern sections, with the option to use the magic loop technique for the sleeve caps if preferred over double-pointed needles.
Stitches Used
This intermediate-level pattern incorporates essential knitting stitches including:
- Stockinette stitch as the primary fabric, created by alternating knit rows on the right side and purl rows on the wrong side when working flat, or knitting every round when working in the round
- Knit front and back (kfb) for increasing stitches during raglan shaping
- Knit two together (k2tog) for right-leaning decreases
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) for left-leaning decreases
- Purl two together (p2tog) for decreasing on purl rows
- Cast on and bind off for securing stitches at the beginning and end
Materials and Specifications
The Mully sweater is knitted with DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn suitable for delicate baby garments. Yardage requirements vary by size: 300 yards for the smallest size (0-3 months) up to 460 yards for the largest size (18 months). An additional 50 yards of contrasting DK weight yarn is needed for the decorative elbow patches. The pattern specifies US size 6 circular needles in both 16-inch and 24-inch lengths for working the body and sleeves in the round, along with four US size 6 double-pointed needles for arm construction or alternatively using the magic loop method with a circular needle. A darning needle is required for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
The gauge for this pattern is 5 stitches and 7 rows over stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure proper gauge and garment fit.
Pattern Notes
The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and instructions for all techniques employed. Five stitch markers are needed to track the raglan increases and pattern sections throughout construction.
