Product Description
This pattern is for a pair of cable lace socks. The cable itself is a Japanese cable lace that is just perfect for socks. There’s enough “give” to make them comfortable, but enough unusual ribbed cabling to make them interesting to look at and fun to knit. And, I have added a touch of lace to make them even more comfortable.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of knitting and purling, lace knitting and cabling).
The cable stitch is both charted and written out line by line.
This pattern is written for 2 circular needles and is written for sizes Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large, and is sized by gauge
The sock pictured here was made with Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock yarn, in colorway, Mirth.
Any light weight sock yarn will work for this pattern in a size M.
Mt. Meakin Cabled Socks by Linda Lehman
What is Being Made
The Mt. Meakin Cabled Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Linda Lehman, available in multiple sizes ranging from Small to Extra Large. These socks combine functional construction with decorative stitch work, featuring an unusual cable pattern paired with faggotting (a delicate lace technique). The design balances structure and flexibility, making these socks both visually interesting and comfortable for everyday wear.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This intermediate-level knitting project requires foundational knowledge of several essential knitting techniques. The primary construction methods include:
- Cable knitting: The signature cable pattern provides visual interest and ensures the socks maintain a snug fit around the leg
- Faggotting: A minor lace technique incorporated into the design that adds flexibility and breathability to the finished socks
- Circular knitting: Constructed using circular needles to create seamless sock fabric
- Kitchener Stitch: Used for grafting the toe closure for a professional, seamless finish
Stitches Used
The Mt. Meakin Cabled Socks employ fundamental knitting stitches as their foundation:
- Knit stitch (K): Forms the base stockinette stitch fabric
- Purl stitch (P): Creates texture variation and is essential for cable definition
- Cable stitches: Twisted stitch combinations that create the dimensional cable pattern
- Lace stitches: Used in the faggotting sections for openwork detail
Materials and Gauge Information
This pattern requires lightweight fingering weight yarn in quantities dependent on sock size. The yardage needed ranges from 390 to 475 yards, allowing crafters to work with various yarn options within the fingering weight category.
Needle selection is size-dependent to achieve proper gauge. The pattern calls for two circular needles in sizes ranging from US #1 to #3 (2.25mm to 3.00mm), with specific recommendations:
- Size Small: US #1 (2.25mm) circular needles
- Size Medium: US #2.50 (2.50mm) circular needles
- Sizes Medium-Large: US #2.75 to #3.00 (2.75–3.00mm) circular needles
- Size Large to Extra Large: US #3.00 (3.00mm) circular needles
The pattern specifies working to stockinette stitch gauge with the following measurements:
- Size Small: 9 stitches per inch
- Size Medium: 8 stitches per inch
- Sizes Medium-Large: 7 stitches per inch
- Sizes Large to Extra Large: 6.5 stitches per inch
Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for executing the Kitchener Stitch toe grafting. An optional 12-inch needle in the working gauge size may be used for transitioning from circular needles during the toe closure.
Skill Level and Pattern Characteristics
Rated as Intermediate difficulty, the Mt. Meakin Cabled Socks assume knitters possess basic competency in knitting, purling, and cable techniques. The combination of cable work and lace faggotting creates a moderately challenging project that rewards careful attention to stitch placement and tension. The design philosophy balances the structured support of the cable with the flexibility provided by the lace sections, resulting in socks that are engineered for both comfort and style.
