Product Description
This adorable little couple are inspired by the characters from Toy Story. The finished knitted Mr and Mrs Potato head dolls measure at 18 cm (7 in) tall from head to toe.
This pattern is an orginal design by myself and is knitted flat on a pair of 3.25mm knitting needles using double knit wool. It's easy to follow and if you can knit, purl, increase and decrease then this will be no problem for you. The pattern has been test knitted to make sure it's simple to follow, but if you get stuck or need any help then I'm happy to help - just message me on Facebook (WoolyMcWoolface)!
Mr and Mrs Potato Head Knitted Toys
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern from designer Wooly McWoolface provides instructions for creating a pair of knitted Toy Story-inspired Potato Head characters. The finished toys measure approximately 18 cm (7 inches) in size, making them charming handmade playthings or decorative items suitable for intermediate knitters.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project that combines traditional knitting construction with craft embellishment techniques. The pattern uses fundamental knitting methods to build three-dimensional toy forms, incorporating increases and decreases to shape the pieces. Assembly involves sewing seams together and stuffing the completed sections to create soft, dimensional characters. Additional craft techniques include felt application and glue-based embellishment for facial features and details.
Stitches and Abbreviations Used
- K – Knit stitch, the foundational knit-side stitch
- P – Purl stitch, creating the reverse texture

- P2tog – Purl two stitches together for decreasing
- Stocking st – Stocking stitch (alternating knit and purl rows to create smooth fabric)

Materials Required
The pattern calls for double knit (DK) weight yarn in multiple colors: beige, blue, orange, black, pink, and white. Knitters will need 3.25 mm (UK size 10) knitting needles to work with the DK yarn. Additional materials include black, white, and red felt for appliqué details, craft glue for securing felt pieces, a darning needle for seaming and finishing, toy stuffing for filling the completed pieces, and scissors for cutting felt and trimming yarn ends.
Pattern Construction
The pattern begins with casting on 8 stitches in beige yarn at the bottom edge of the head section. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases worked across rows. Once the knitted pieces reach their full dimensions, they are sewn together using the darning needle, leaving a small opening for inserting toy stuffing before final closure. Facial features and character details are created using the colored felt pieces and craft glue, allowing for creative customization of each Mr and Mrs Potato Head pair.
