Mouse by Natty Knits

Project Overview

The Mouse is a charming knitted toy pattern designed by Clare Doornbos from Natty Knits. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished stuffed mouse approximately 2.75" tall, making it an ideal small gift or collection piece. The pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF and uses classic toy-making techniques combined with modern knitting construction methods.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a three-dimensional knitted toy mouse suitable for children or as decorative amigurumi-style pieces. The finished toy is stuffed with fiberfill to create a soft, cuddly form. The mouse features embroidered eyes created with black yarn scraps, adding personality and definition to the completed toy.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Mouse pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its three-dimensional shape:

  • Short Row Shaping: The primary construction technique used throughout this pattern. Short rows create the contoured body shape by working back and forth across partial sections of stitches rather than completing full rows. This technique creates intentional loops of yarn under stitches that must be worked together with the stitch above when knitting back over them, adding depth and dimension to the toy.
  • Sideways Construction: The mouse body is knitted horizontally rather than vertically, allowing the designer to use short row shaping effectively across the width of the piece.
  • Sectional Knitting: The pattern is divided into seven manageable sections of six rows each, making the short row technique easier to follow and reducing the likelihood of errors in this intermediate construction method.
  • Embroidery: Black yarn is embroidered onto the finished knitted surface to create the mouse's eyes, a common technique in toy knitting for adding facial features.

Stitches Used

Stockinette Stitch forms the foundation of this pattern, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric surface. The gauge is established at 8 stitches and 12 rows per 1 inch when worked in Stockinette Stitch on US size 1 (2.25 mm) needles, ensuring proper sizing and fabric density for a stuffed toy.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The Mouse pattern calls for approximately 30 yards of fingering weight yarn (4-ply), a fine yarn weight that allows for detailed stitch definition and appropriate scale for a small toy. Scrap yarn in black is used for embroidering the eyes, and additional yarn scraps serve as stitch markers during construction.

Needles and Notions: US size 1 (2.25 mm) double-pointed needles are recommended, or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in yarn ends and embroidering the facial features. Fiberfill stuffing completes the toy, providing the filling that gives the mouse its three-dimensional form once the knitted body is completed.
