Mountolive Socks by Jo Sharp

What is Being Made

The Mountolive Socks are a comfortable, everyday knit sock designed for versatile wear around the house or under boots. These socks are crafted to provide extra warmth and softness, making them ideal for those seeking cozy footwear with practical durability.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft, making it accessible for beginner-level knitters. The sock is constructed using circular knitting techniques, which allows for seamless construction and even stitch distribution throughout the garment.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The Mountolive Socks utilize fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques essential to sock construction:

  • Knit stitch (K) – the primary stitch forming the fabric base
  • Knit 2 together (K2tog) – a decrease stitch used to shape the sock
  • Slip, slip, knit (sl 1, k1, psso) – an alternative decrease method for symmetrical shaping
  • Knit into front and back (Kfb) – an increase technique for adding stitches
  • Make 1 (M1) – another increase method for subtle stitch additions
  • Grafting – a finishing technique that joins stitches together seamlessly at the toe

The sock features a shaped toe construction worked across three needles, with strategic decreases that gradually reduce stitches until only 12 remain, which are then grafted together for a smooth, closed finish.

Yarn and Materials

The Mountolive Socks are designed to be knitted with Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed yarn in the Wintergrass4 x 50g balls of aran weight yarn, which provides the structure and warmth characteristic of these socks. Aran weight yarn is a medium-weight option that creates a durable, cushioned fabric suitable for everyday sock wear. The pattern is worked on circular needles, which facilitate the seamless construction method used throughout the design.

Sizing and Finishing

The Mountolive Socks are designed to fit an average adult women's size. The finished socks should be lightly pressed with a warm iron over a damp cloth to set the stitches and enhance the final appearance of the knitted fabric.
