Product Description
Mother’s LoveNothing is as sweet as a mother’s love As soon as I saw this lovely heart lace pattern, I knew it needed to be something special. Then I found out that a lovely gentle lady that I know was having her first baby, and it was going to be a boy. So I designed this shawl as a small item that she could pop round her shoulders whilst nursing the baby. The main body is a pale pink with the edging knitted in a blue yarn. It is a semi crescent shawl knitted top down with a beautiful lace edge added on at the end.
Mother's Love Shawl by Tracy O'Brien
Project Overview
The Mother's Love Shawl is a semi-crescent knitted shawl designed by independent designer Tracy O'Brien. This intermediate-level knitting project was created as a nursing shawl—a practical and elegant accessory for new mothers to wear around their shoulders while caring for their babies. The design features a beautiful heart lace pattern as its focal point, combining a pale pink main body with a contrasting blue edging for visual interest and sentimental appeal.
What is Being Made
This is a semi-crescent shawl, a versatile garment that drapes gracefully around the shoulders. The shawl is knitted from the top down, with the main body worked first in the primary color, followed by the addition of a decorative lace edge in a contrasting color. The semi-crescent shape makes it an ideal size for wrapping around shoulders during nursing or everyday wear, providing both warmth and style.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Mother's Love Shawl employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level crafter. The garment utilizes top-down construction, which allows knitters to try on the shawl as they work and adjust the final size as needed. The pattern incorporates lace knitting, a decorative technique that creates openwork patterns through strategic yarn overs and decreases. The heart lace pattern serves as the visual centerpiece of the design, requiring attention to stitch placement and pattern repeats. The edging technique involves picking up stitches along the finished edge of the main body and knitting an additional decorative border, a common method for adding refined finishing details to shawls.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern information, the Mother's Love Shawl features heart lace stitches as its primary decorative element. Lace patterns typically combine knit and purl stitches with yarn overs and decreases to create the openwork design. The edging likely uses similar lace techniques to complement the main body. The use of these stitches creates an elegant, feminine aesthetic appropriate for the shawl's intended purpose as a gift for a new mother.
Yarn and Materials
The Mother's Love Shawl is designed to be knitted with 4-ply sock yarn, a lightweight yet durable yarn weight that creates a delicate, drapeable fabric ideal for shawls. The pattern requires approximately 500–600 meters (550–660 yards) of yarn, typically obtained from two 100-gram skeins, though only about 60 grams of each skein is used for the completed shawl.
The sample shawl shown in the pattern was created using:
- Main Colour: Down Sheepy Lane Comfy Sock yarn in Blushing Bride, a pale pink shade. This yarn is composed of 80% superwash merino wool and 20% nylon, providing softness, durability, and easy care at 365 meters per 100 grams.
- Contrast Colour: Yarn For the Soul High Twist Silk Sock yarn in Mount Fuji, a blue shade. This yarn blends 80% superwash merino wool with 20% silk, adding luxury and subtle sheen to the edging at 366 meters per 100 grams.
The combination of merino wool with nylon in the main color ensures the shawl is washable and resilient for regular use, while the silk contrast adds a sophisticated finishing touch. The high twist construction of the contrast yarn provides structure and definition to the decorative edging.
Needles and Tools
The Mother's Love Shawl is worked on US 4 / 3.5mm needles or a size appropriate to achieve the desired gauge with the chosen yarn. Circular needles are typically recommended for shawl construction, allowing the knitter to work flat or in the round depending on the pattern's design.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Mother's Love Shawl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace patterns and multi-color construction. The combination of lace knitting and the top-down construction method requires comfort with reading charts, managing yarn overs and decreases, and picking up stitches for the edging. Knitters at this level should have experience with basic shaping and stitch manipulation.
