Product Description

An exciting and interesting Scandi influenced colour-work sweater, with a lovely modern look. The sleeves are in stocking stitch with a centre rib panel. A cosy polo neck finishes the design perfectly. A plus with this design is that on the back and front all wrong-side rows follow the colours used on the previous row - easy!

Please note: this pattern includes a copy of my original handwritten chart.

"Mood Scandi" Unisex Colour-Work Sweater with Polo Neck

What Is Being Made

The "Mood Scandi" is an unisex colour-work sweater featuring a polo neck collar, designed by Pat Menchini. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a sophisticated garment available in six size options, ranging from chest sizes 84-89 cm (33-35 inches) up to 122-127 cm (48-50 inches). The finished sweater offers an actual chest measurement of approximately 97 cm to 141 cm depending on the chosen size, with a consistent length to shoulder of 66-69 cm across all sizes. The sleeves measure 48 cm in length across all sizes, making this a versatile design suitable for various body types and proportions.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used

This sweater employs colour-work knitting as its primary decorative technique, creating patterned designs through the use of multiple yarn colours worked into the fabric. The garment is constructed using stocking stitch (plain st st), which forms the foundation fabric and provides the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of Scandinavian-inspired knitwear. The polo neck collar is an integral design feature that adds both visual interest and functional warmth to the finished piece.

The pattern requires working with two different needle sizes during construction, a common technique in knitting that allows the crafter to achieve proper tension and create distinct sections of the garment. Stitch holders are utilized during the knitting process to temporarily hold stitches while other sections are being completed, a standard practice in garment construction that enables seamless assembly of multiple pieces.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This project uses King Cole Indulge Chunky yarn, a chunky-weight yarn that knits up quickly and creates a substantial, warm fabric. Each ball contains 230 metres or 251 yards and weighs 100 grams. The colour-work design requires three complementary shades:

  • Shade A, Granite (2458): The primary colour, requiring 3 to 4 balls depending on size selection
  • Shade B, Bisque (2450): A secondary colour, requiring 2 to 3 balls depending on size selection
  • Shade C, Copper (2455): An accent colour, requiring 1 to 2 balls depending on size selection

The pattern specifies 5 mm (UK 6, US 8) and 6 mm (UK 4, US 10) knitting needles, with the size difference allowing the crafter to achieve the correct tension in different sections of the garment. Additional supplies include 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction.

Tension and Gauge Information

Proper tension is critical for achieving the correct finished measurements. This pattern requires a tension of 14 stitches and 21 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch. When substituting yarn colours or brands, maintaining this exact tension is essential to ensure the sweater fits as intended and the colour-work pattern displays correctly at the specified dimensions.
