Product Description
this design was created in collaboration with De Rerum Natura yarns
french version is exclusively available through dererumnatura fr
The cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down. Knitting starts from a provisional CO. Shoulder parts are worked first, then sts are picked up for sleeve caps. From this point fronts, sleeves and back are worked simultaneously top down to sleeve separation, where sleeve sts are placed on hold to work the body in one piece to end. After finishing the body, sleeve sts are picked up again to work the sleeves in the round top down to the cuffs. Collar sts are picked up around the neck. After finishing the collar, button bands are picked up along the fronts.
Charts and written instructions for cable/lace panels are provided in the pattern. For more information, please refer to the pattern page on ravlery.
Monte Rosa Cardigan by Isabell Kraemer
What is Being Made
Monte Rosa is a handknit cardigan design created by independent designer Isabell Kraemer. This intermediate-level knitting pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and offers six size options ranging from XS to XXL, with finished bust circumferences from 83.5 cm (32.9 inches) to 128 cm (50.4 inches). The cardigan is designed for unlimited personal use and features a sophisticated construction suitable for knitters with intermediate experience.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
Monte Rosa employs several key knitting techniques to create its finished structure. The cardigan is constructed using circular needles or straight needles depending on knitter preference, with ribbing worked at the lower edge and cuffs to create definition and stretch. The pattern incorporates a cable needle, indicating the presence of cable stitch work that adds textural interest to the design. Sleeves are worked in the round using DPNs (double-pointed needles) or longer circular needles, a common technique for seamless sleeve construction. The button band is picked up from live stitches along the front edges, allowing for a neat, integrated closure. Stitch markers and stitch holders or scrap yarn are used throughout to manage multiple sections of the garment.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern utilizes ribbing as a foundational stitch for the lower body, cuffs, and neckline areas, providing elasticity and a polished finish. Cable stitches feature prominently in the design, as evidenced by the inclusion of a cable needle in the required materials. These techniques combine to create visual depth and texture characteristic of classic cardigan construction.
Yarn and Materials
Monte Rosa is designed to be knitted with Gilliatt by De Rerum Natura, a yarn that provides 250 meters (270 yards) per 100-gram skein. The pattern requires 4 to 6 skeins of main color yarn depending on size, with the sample shown in poivre et sel (a salt-and-pepper colorway). One additional skein in a contrast color, shown in potimarron (a pumpkin-orange shade), is required for accent details. The pattern calls for multiple needle sizes to accommodate different stitch densities: 3.5 mm (US 4) needles for the button band, 4.0 mm (US 6) needles for ribbing sections, and 4.5 mm (US 7) needles for the main body and sleeves. Additional notions include stitch markers, stitch holders or scrap yarn for holding stitches, and a cable needle for working cable stitches.
